Description Phew. Here it is. Miklagarðr. The most recent magnum opus. This has taken more hours than I cared to keep track of. At a guess 50-60.
Please no (serious) complaints about historical accuracy. Yes, I am an historian; no, this is not my research interest or period.
The only references used were pictures of the Hagia Sofia, and the replica longboat Havhingsten fra Glendalough for some aspects of the boat.

The first person to cite the direct inspiration for this picture gets lots of kudos, a free watcher in the shape of yours truly, and a virtual biscuit emailed to the account of their choice.

A magnificent work. I know well the saga of Harald Hardrada, from Sticklestad, to his fleeing to Kiev, finally arriving at Constantinople. The splendor and beauty he saw must have been something very close to this. The only tragedy in his tale was failing to bring Maria back to Norway.

Overall an incredible painting

Uhm.. Tough one.. First of all (let's start easy): This is a fantastic piece. I truly love it.

Now.. Inspiration.

I would go with Harald Hardrada (or Harald Sigurdsson, before his rise to the throne of Norway in 1047AD. Before that I think it's fair to consider him the most famous (or infamous) of the Varangian Guard in Miklagarðr.

I WOULD have said it was a painting of his "escape" (or whatever one would call it) back to Norway after having been denied the right to leave the Varangian Guard in 1042AD, but then I noticed the wonder and curiocity of the crew, and so it must be his arival.

.. But come to think of it.. He was heading a fleet of estimated 20 ships of hardened veterans from fighting for Jaroslav I, and I see only one Snekkja.... hmm...

Thanks. It was during this painting that I finally realised what artists are going on about when they talk about 'the light being excellent'. What you're doing is painting the light reflected off the object, not the object itself.

And no, sorry, haven't seen it. Is that that one with Antonio Banderas in it?
