Description Hey again to all my brony watchers and everyone who watches my MLP work regardless. I know that you've already seen a lot of my work before, but this one is probably one that I'm a tad bit conflicted over.

You see, when I created Luna's Starry Night [link] I was driven by personal comparisons between the subtle meanings behind Starry Night, Van Gogh's personal life, and Luna's nature to the MLP:FiM fandom. I took all of these into consideration and even constantly listened to fan-made songs about the princess when making it.

I felt proud of what I did with that piece, but I can't say the same thing for Celestia. In this I was trying to tie together "Celestia, the bringer of Light" with "Monet, the painter of Light" which fits in my mind as I can now understand how topics so positive and optimistic can still be so avant gard in contemporary society; in other words, Society's initial view of Monet during his contemporary life, compared to The Brony Fandom in our lives.
If you're head hurts a little, I do apologize.

All that aside, I do feel like my picture is severely lacking. That's why I waited over a month to upload it because I wanted a premium membership to activate critiques. Anyone who is still reading, I humbly ask for your honestly brutal critique on this. Is it perfect? Should I give this piece another shot? Am I doing something harmful by comparing a fictional cartoon character princess to one of the most prolific modern artists ever known? Did I even capture the magic that Monet expressed every time he touched paint to a canvas?

Thank you so much for your critique. I did study up on Monet pretty well, but you're right, I do need to look into his ability to reflect light off of water, which was revolutionary at the time of his career. Anyways, I will return to recreating Celestia since I have a very important task for her in the future.

Again, I appreciate your feedback and hope that you can critique my future works.

This is my first critique and I will take the time and consideration to write you something insightful from another traditional artist's perspective. From the beginning:

Vision - is truly wonderful, but when viewing the work from a distance everything seems to blend altogether, that weakens the picture.
Originality - I have never encountered an artwork as lovely as yours and that's in all honesty.
Technique - I admire the impressionist technique applied in this art piece, a very strong utilization of impressionism is employed which in turn strengthens the artwork.
Impact - your work is always astounding in my eyes. Almost immediately I comment on your works because I look up to you as an artist.

I will give you a few tips: put more emphasis on the actual character (foreground) in the piece (or next works) and make the background recede. You always want your character/s to come to life in the artwork and for them to be the focal point/centre of the work itself. If you wanted to strengthen this work even further - the colouring on Celestia is fine, but I would have gone with a faded approach, still implementing the impressionist technique on the background. Or vice versa, Celestia can appear more bold, bright and vivid.

I just hope this helps e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="366" title=" (Big Grin)"/> if anything please let me knowe.deviantart.net/emoticons/h/h… " width="15" height="13" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="357" title="Heart"/>

Misclicked...continuing.

The tail grazing the ground especially helps this. As far as what I learned back in my days of photography, all things foreground/background/positioning/focus seem to be perfectly acceptable.

"I will give you a few tips: put more emphasis on the actual character (foreground) in the piece (or next works) and make the background recede."
Personally I found the emphasis to be acceptable and Celestia captivating, especially because of how the background has a smooth feel to it and almost blended quality. She also pops out and though the castle is a mild distraction, it does give the added benefit of making her appear closer.

Thank you again Chiaro. Im glad to see you being subjective on my work, and Im happy that I was your first critique in this matter. I was afraid of the colors blending together the way it did, but I felt it necessary to use visual connectivity in the picture to establish meaning behind it all (A very traditional aspect, but one that Monet carried over in his earlier works). But you are right in that sense nonetheless, and I did go a little too far with making each color on Celestia part of the background in some way.

Even if you left the colours exactly like you did on Celestia even though she is mostly encompassed with "cool colours" the background could've been completed with "warm colours" while still retaining that Monet aspect in the work ^^

No problem, of course I love your work

In all honesty, I actually love this piece. The entire idea of combining Celestia with Monet is wonderful, it shows a knowledge of art history that is not often seen when the main subject is something often considered so simple, like ponies.
I like how it feels as though Celestia and Canterlot shine off the page, as well as the golden shimmer off the buildings and the ground. The gradation in her mane between colors is exquisite, and I love how deep the colors get, rather than the customary pastel shades. All of the colors feel rich, and bright, which fits with the optimistic message.
The technique and detail is also gorgeous. It seems as though every part of this piece is careful and deliberate. If not for the description, I would have thought you would be beaming with pride for this piece, because it truly is great. I would say it's near perfect. To my eye, I cannot see anything that I would change, but perfection is never really something that happens. I would say you captured the same sort of magic that Monet had. Most truly great artists in their time, believe themselves failures, or are not satisfied with their pieces, but your idea was unique and interesting, and marvelously executed. I would love to see more pieces like this. e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="391" title=" (Smile)"/>

Thank you very much for your critique, though I don't agree with having captured the same feel, let alone magic, that Monet had with much of his work. I appreciate you taking the time to point out what you felt worked in this picture, even if I don't for some of it. I know that most artistic interpretation is left up to the viewer, and Im glad you're opinion was opposing to mine. I may one day return to creating a piece like this if the response continues to vary subjectively.

The description is impressive as well.
As seen in the background you did let it look like a dreamy outcome, which I likee.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="366" title=" (Big Grin)"/> Highlighted the Canterlot Castle main attractions gives a good point of vieuw. Shiny and bright!

As for Princess Celestia, she looks wonderful, as Always, her look in her eye's you did choose very welle.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="366" title=" (Big Grin)"/> Altough it isn't a MLP related style, it is a good piece of art though couse of the many details. Like her mane&tail which are curly beautifuly done! (no not like a van Gogh altough your other work suggest a hint, but a good attempt! carry on!) Nice face expression, like she is concerned.

The bright clear coloring is a treath for the eye! Sometimes there are too many effects and shades used which causes a to 'complicated or busy' picture. Yours shows a smooth and fluid shaped Celestia!

I don't know what you'll have in mind for the future in art. Just carry on and see what's happening. Please stay improving and well as a hobby I think you'll do finee.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="366" title=" (Big Grin)"/>
There are already enough 'bored' or 'rated' ppl on DA which I pitty,everyone/everypony does her/his best. If you're serious about art and creating, just do your best!

Thank you very much for being the first person to give this an actual critique! I appreciate your incite into Celestia, but I have to correct you in one point. I was going for Monet in this piece, not Van Gogh (did that for Luna).

One question I have for you is, given what you have just reviewed, should I take another crack at this piece? I feel that I can do better than this, but don't know if I should try again in the future. I do have a purpose for Luna and Celestia in the future for the fandom, and Im planning to hold them both in auction after getting them both signed by their respective VA's and framed. What concerns me is that they may not feel congruent to each other when put side by side. with one another.

Yes monet is more likely...true. Mine look like worse than picaso LOL nvm .

Yes you should Always do what you like to do. I mean as time and capability concerns you should not always depend on others. They may critisize or help you, but in the end it is you alone who decides to do or not to do. As long you not put to much stress or force yourself.

I can say i think am a real MLP fan who has over 500 fanvidsinclude snowdrop and doublerainboom etc.. aswell loads of DA and other sites-saved drawings, (over 1 GB of material ) and it is always nice to see more Therefore I do like to see ppl's progress or there point of vieuw how they make fanart!

So as short awnser to your question, yes if you like you certainly must do! And not forget to have fun

The color work it's self is fine and the hair actually looks like it's flowing because of it. I think you could have improved the positioning so the palace is super imposed above her. Like she is the wings of equestria's rule. Also make a brighter point below her, or something to focus her gaze on. Make the lower shadows on her body a bit darker. It was good not using line on the palace, gives it an ghostly almost dreamy appearance.

Thanks, been a while since I've gotten any kind of critique on her. Truth be told, I was pretty disappointed in how this came out too since it didn't follow the artistic connection and influence that I had planned out for it. I'm going to make another Celestia piece in little bit and you will probably understand what I mean when you see it. You were pretty right on the mark with this though, I didn't quite plan her out very well cause I was trying for an almost opposing mirror between her and Luna muffyn-man.deviantart.com/art/…

You're welcome man. Keep up the great work-just because it doesn't resemble the work of some famous artist doesn't by any means make it bad. Even if it didn't come out the way you hoped it would, it's still a gorgeous work of incredible talent. It's often said that an artist's greatest critic is themselves, and I know this for a fact to be true. Don't feel as if you've failed or something because you've still produced stunning art.

Well... There is, but its due to something other than if i made a pretty picture or not. I see it as flawed because I didn't depict her in the style that can be attributed to the artist whom I drew inspiration from. If I had not put down Monet in the description would you have recognized the connection?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

incomingtrouble In reply to Muffyn-Man [2013-09-27 02:18:25 +0000 UTC]

Perhaps not, being that I barely heard of Monet beforehand, but still - Depsite it not being the carbon copy of your inspiration, it still has a touch of uniqueness every artist holds in their own way. I'm fascinated on how you did the hair, in all honesty.

Oh, regarding the hair is a style I've developed with any character I illustrate, I attempt to make her hair flow in ephemeral brush strokes. The idea was to subtly blend the different colors around each other while fading it with certain parts of the environment to make it almost illuminate.

I used a combination of Copic Markers and Acrylic Paint on Bristol Board for this if that helps too.
