Description I love Nadir. A lot. He's pretty hardcore, if you think about it. First off, he's a stellar detective. Then he helps Erik escape by faking Erik's death, only to bear the brunt of the shah's wrath in a prison for a decade (Or however long it was...I haven't read Kay in a while). You'd think that after he escaped or was released or what have you that he would want to retire in Florida and just chill for the rest of his life, but no.

He follows Erik across the continent, keeps tabs on his misdeeds, and pulls a Bruce Willis by leading Raoul through endless booby traps in the cellars of the opera. Then he survives vicious torture (again) and lives to a ripe old age to tell about it.

All with one hand. Because the other is at the level of his eyes.

That, my friends, is one hardcore Persian. This guy seriously needs an epic theme song. Or his own action film.

And he's so cinematically under-appreciated! It drives me nuts! As far as I know, there are only three Phantom film versions (the silent film, the cartoon, and that horrendous David Staller one) in which the daroga plays a large part. Otherwise he's completely written out, which is just too bad, because he's such a wonderful character. Of course, I'm mostly looking at him through Kay's lens, because you cannot help but love Nadir when you read that book. The man's been put through the ringer, and yet he still manages to be kind.

Plus, you gotta love the Sherlock-Watson dynamic between Erik and Nadir. Although as far as I know, Sherlock never wanted to roast Watson alive. But then again, I'm not particularly well-versed in Sherlockian goodness.

Oookay, big tangent aside, I came home from classes today and had this overwhelming urge to work on Nadir's design, so there you go. I think as far as his facial features go, he's heavily based on a friend of my family's who is from Palestine and who's name is, in fact, Nadir. So every single time I read the novel, I picture real-life Nadir in place of book-Nadir, and it really just fits. Plus, both are really awesome, so there you go. Of course, real-life Nadir has no idea that every time I see him, I want to geek out just a little bit because it's like the daroga walked out of the book.

ANYway...

I picture him slightly stocky and shorter (though it's not exactly difficult to be shorter than Erik). Obviously when he's in Persia, he'd be wearing traditional Persian clothing. When he's in France, however, I always pictured him sort of blending European and Middle Eastern styles, picking and choosing things from each culture for his wardrobe. Which results in this snappy little getup. The fez, of course, is a must. For one thing, he just likes it. For another thing, it covers his bald spot quite nicely.

For whatever reason, I've always pictured Nadir with half-moon spectacles. Maybe not when he was younger, but as he aged, it just seems to work. And for the most part (at least when Erik isn't grinding away at his nerves), I imagine him to have "smiling eyes," if that makes any sense at all, kind of twinkling at his own private joke.

Am I totally projecting Dumbledore onto Nadir?

You know, that may not be a bad thing. They would probably hit it off, in fact. They could talk philosophy over a bowl of lemon drops. I'll bet Nadir likes lemon drops. He totally does.

So much love for this guy! I could talk about him all day!

The Daroga Β© Leroux.
Long-winded, unnecessary explanation Β© me.

I love your picture of Nadir, but I always picture him and Erik as about the same high as in Lerouxs book the Daroga explains that he can reach everything Erik can because they are about the same size. This is YOUR Daroga and I really like him, I love the fact that he is wearing glasses!

Aw, Daroga.
Honestly, I think that if phanwriters continue to forget him, I'll do some sort of revolution... will you join me? Nadir deserves more
And I haven't read Kay's book yet ): I HAVE to. Really. Damn Italy and its empty bookshops... it doesn't exist here, and I'm not good at buying stuff on the Internet... but I will find a way. Absolutely *__*
Anyway, I love both the drawing and all the useless-and-yet-interesting-and-funny stuff you've written below it. Hurray for Nadir and Dumbledore speaking about philosophy! Love them both (but Nadir more!)
Great art, as always you rule for Phantom's art!! I think you could well be considered the best Phan-Author here and I'm just going to start reading your fanfiction. Yes, definitely!

CHILLIN' in Florida?

LOVE your depiction of the daroga. He has a very friendly, kind of casual appearance, with much softer features than either Erik or Christine.

I must take exception to the fez, though. Leroux describes him as: ". . . a person with an ebony skin, with eyes of jade and with an ASTRAKHAN CAP on his head: the Persian!"

So ix-nay on the ez-fay!

[link]

Makes sense. Mazandaran Province (Iran/Persia) borders the southern portion of the Caspian Sea, and on the northwestern shore is the bit of Russia that includes Astrakhan. No doubt there is an overlap of customs and clothing amongst the countries that trade regularly with each other.

[link]

It would also explain how the khanum heard wind of Erik so easily, and sent Nadir on a trip that was almost undoubtedly less time consuming and onerous than we poor, geographically-challenged would imagine. (Not that the length or difficulty of his trip would have made a difference to her, but patience was certainly NOT her middle name. )

I don't remember for certain, but I believe Nadir spent five years in prison, not ten.

Ho, dang, rimshot!

Thanks! I'm glad you noticed that--I have a hard time softening features, so it was nice to practice with Nadir.

Ooh, thanks for the clarification! I remember the Astrakhan cap mention, but somehow, a fez always ends up on Nadir's head. And that DOES make perfect sense! I never knew that, actually. How close the region was to Russia. Again, makes perfect sense with the khanum hearing about Erik. You know, I can't believe I've never taken the time to really investigate this. Thanks for the research.

Plus, now I can draw Nadir with a fuzzy hat.

Looks like I left out a word in my original posting. It was SUPPOSED to be ". . . than we poor, geographically-challenged Americans would imagine.

I was quite surprised when I discovered how close Astrakhan and Manzandaran are. Heck, I was surprised that Manzandaran is an actual place. I had supposed it to be an exotic sounding place that Leroux made up. Kind of like Narnia, Collinsport, Smallville or Metro City.

Anyway, I think the whole fez thing has come about because that's one of the stereotypical hats Westerners have been shown Middle-Eastern men wearing, along with burnooses, keffiyehs (had to look up the name of this one) and turbans.

Obviously, some poor deluded phan artist way back when drew The Persian with a fez and it has become ubiquitous. Sigh

Love your artwork, as always. Poor Daroga, always left out of the adaptations. There is a very good radio adaptation of the origanal novel by Big Finish and it has Daroga. His voice is pretty awesome.
Now that I think about it, Daroga is probably the most under appreciated character in Leroux too. He never even gets a proper name, he's just "The Persian" or "The Daroga." Kay's Nadir is so fabulous it kinda wants to make me cry.

I think it might be the fez that channels Dumbledore. I don't know why, but I've always though of Dumbledore with a fez, maybe that's just me...

Thank you so much! I know, it's not fair. Ooh, good--I just bought the Big Finish version, so now I'm excited for Nadir.

He IS under appreciated. And you're right, that's why Kay's Erik is so much better. He's actually a person, and a great one, at that.

Ha, Dumbledore could rock a fez. I dig it.

NevaSirenda [2012-01-21 03:03:09 +0000 UTC]

Fantastic character design for an awesome character. You're right, Daroga doesn't get nearly enough attention. I'm not sure whether he considers himself Erik's warden, conscience or friend, but he sure is devoted to Erik whether through caring or duty, and I think deep down in his heart of hearts Erik considers him the only real friend he ever had.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Muirin007 In reply to NevaSirenda [2012-01-28 00:10:29 +0000 UTC]

Thank you so much! He probably considers himself all three. And the two definitely bond, whether they want to admit it or not. After all, they're both alone in the world, faced with incredibly difficult burdens. They can empathize on some level with each other, I think.

Which makes me love Nadir even more, because he's the only person who can annoy Erik without risking certain death.
