Description My grandmother found all these old (reeeally old) family photos and gave them to me to scan. Being the complete sucker for these things that I am, I was so excited to look through them with her, especially after we found two tintypes from the early 1870s of some of our great-great-something-or-others. I didn't want to scan those, though, because I was worried I'd ruin them. But they are SO. COOL.

These are my great-great grandparents with my great-grandmother Lula somewhere in Texas in the early 20th century. The guy on the left was known as "Old Man George," and apparently, he was the meanest, rootinest, tootinest feller on this side o' the Mississippi. I guess he went around knocking down outhouses when people were in there.

I am so proud.

His wife looks like a bundle of joy, too. (Lula wasn't any better, either. My family is seriously filled with a bunch of sourpusses.)

HAPPY FACES ARE HAPPY.

Picture taking was serious stuff back then, that poor family probably just wait half an hour for the picture to focus, all while standing in the same pose, trying not to breath too often.
Fun fun.

I know they are your rels and I don't want to sound harsh... but... there's just something disturbing about the cold, dead look in their eyes!

(Apologies for the late comment!)

Oh, my gosh, trust me, you're not being harsh at ALL. My family is nuts on both sides. This is my mother's side, and a lot of the men had reputations for being all-out brawlers. The man in this picture, George, is my great-great grandfather (or something like that), and he apparently went around kicking the crap out of his mules and his outhouses. Their daughter, the little girl here, Lula, was a piece of work, too. She was my grandmother's mother-in-law, and my grandmother still, to this day, gets furious whenever she talks about Lula because the woman was apparently so manipulative and cold.

You know, Brooke Shields recently found out she was descended from French royalty. Me? Yeah, I'm descended from mule-kickers and back-stabbing harpies.

I am so proud.

I can so see that! There is something very... erm... determined there. My ancestor sailed on the Victory with admiral Nelson at the battle of Trafalgar. I get car sick, let alone sea sick! More worryingly though, my immediate family are probably more actually mental like your ancestors. I could very much see several bonkers relatives kicking farm animals etc. Mind you, I suppose that's normal for Liverpool... Just a fantastic photo! So please you shared it!

Lol, i love this, I just found a treasure box full of my SUPER old family photos. Arent they fun to look at? I guess my great grandpa walked around town with a rifle saying he was going to kill his daughter's husband...heh. Gotta love grumpy characters, specially ones with a rifle or temper hehe.

Perhaps it's just the ridiculously long amount of time you have to sit in the same position before the photo is done being taken. After all, smiling makes your face hurt after awhile and they didn't have the quick digital ones we have today.

haha, the woman reminds me of my great great granny Eileen. Charming woman. housekeeper of the most notorious London serial killers in the 60's and slept around with some royal dude. Her husband, in comparison, was lovely.

Lula looks so cute, though

Everybody looked kinda down in those days; I suspect it really had more to do with how long it took to actually make a photo back then, you had to stand still for so long it was kinda boring -- they all look like "Aren't we done YET?"

Lula is actually quite cute, though; I like the little bored-kicking foot, there.
