My portrait of the first Filipino saint is rendered in watercolor.
Lorenzo was born in the Philippines to a Chinese father and Filipino mother, who raised him as a Christian. Lorenzo himself was active in the church and later married and had children of his own. around the age of 36 Lorenzo was implicated in a murder. No details of the accusations remain except that Lorenzo fled the country for safety on a ship bound for Japan with three Dominican priests. Sadly the passengers arrived in Japan during a wave of persecution and Lorenzo and his companions were arrested upon arrival for being Christians. Despite unbearable torture, Lorenzo would not recant his faith. As he died he declared “…Had I a thousand lives, all these to Him I shall offer. Do with me as you please.” Lorenzo was canonized in 1987 and was the first Filipino saint.
