Description ...... because paper masks fool'em every time.

Next up in my line of cosplay pics is my Spytron 3000, also known as the Disguise Kit- part of the Spy’s arsenal in Team Fortress 2, the online game by Valve.

I actually started on the Spytron first, before beginning construction on any of the other props. When I began, my initial idea was to just order a cigarette case online, draw and paint a simple 2D version of the Spytron, then paste it inside the case (this was my very first attempt at cosplay, after all). However, after some contemplation and a little planning, I thought that it might not be so difficult (and might be a lot more fun) to build a 3 dimensional version of the Spytron instead.

So, this is what I ended up with!

It became a much bigger job than I initially intended, and I made several mistakes along the way (including painting the wrong side of the matte board for the wood portion, which, ironically, turned out looking a lot more like real wood close up than the other side would have),but I am quite happy with the end result!

What is the screen and buttons actually made of?

This is my older model Spytron. The screen and buttons are made of matte board.

My new model is much more accurate... Its screen and buttons are made of Sculpey!

I'm absolutely blown away by your props. I've been looking into ordering items online so that I can make my own Spy cosplay [I really want a reasonably good prop Dead Ringer, and I've been looking at pocketwatches to see if I can find something I can dummy into a good facsimile]. Your stuff is just perfect, I'm very impressed! Please, keep up the good work!

Thank you so much!!!

I have wanted to try my hand at the Dead Ringer, too! Hummm… I wonder how difficult it is to gut a pocket watch?
Best of luck with your Spy cosplay!

How exactly did you rewire the case in order to remove the second metal holder?

I hope that answers your question properly. If you are trying to make your own Spytron 3000 following my design steps and need some additional help, feel free to ask!

Actually, I was unable to remove the right holder. So, instead, I took a pair of fine pliers, twisted the metal spring until I could move the right holder to the left side of the case, pulled the spring wire tight to compensate for the lost space, then twisted the spring back in place on the opposite side. The right holder had no spring power behind it after that, so I measured a strip matte board to fit over both the left and right holders, and glued them both together. Crude, I admit, but it worked!
