Description A 1:50 scale model of a sculpture i proposed to be created and placed in a river near me. The actual sculpture would have been 60ft tall, and constructed in high grade fibre glass then covered in alternating brass and steel plates, metals that were heavily used in the ship yards before they closed down. The eyes of the kraken are portholes and a flame like light source would be seen thru them, like a furnace burning. The whole sculpture would be mounted to a floating platform that would rise and fall with the tide, the platform would not be visible from the surface would would ensure the sculpture was always the right distance out from the surface of the water. The whole body and arms of the kraken are painted in UV paint so at night blacklights could be turned on and the whole object would glow much like the bio-luminescence seen in deep sea creatures....meaning the sculpture would be visible from a long distance.
The whole thing is a monument to the decline of industries in my area, which was once the world leader in ship building....i chose to base it all the the poem 'The Kraken' by Tennyson.....i felt it was a fitting description of something mighty falling. If you have never read the poem i urge you to look it up on google its a lovely but very sad thing a steam punk feel to the work is intended.
