Description "It is pronounced FAN-shaaw."

I was in a Deadlands campaign a while back and had myself a jolly good time playing as the acerbic, highly prim and most certainly proper Mrs. Vidalia P. Featherstonhaugh, a young widow of significant means and avid big-game huntress.  With her unflappable British stoicism and her not-entirely-as-unflappable valet Rupert*, she travels the Weird West seeking out the strange and exotic.  Then she mounts it on the wall in the dining room.

"Spleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeendid."

*Yes, by rights she should have a maid, not a valet.  However, her unconventional hobbies require some unconventional allowances and really, even Vidalia wouldn't expect the average London lady's maid to keep up with her.  There was some backstory here, as well as some meta-game story and a lot of "this is much funnier".

Have to say I really love the costume designs in here. Expecially the thin stripes on the woman's dress - they really give form and volume to the drawing. All the textures (the gun, the dress, the sack, the tie, the feathers) look amazing and what they are supposed to look like. Really like this one. ^^

Something I found out at school: Stripes, checks and plaids are AWESOME at giving clothing volume.  Yes, they take time but they are so worth the effort.  (Nevermind that I adore drawing plaids because they are just plain fun.)

I have to admit, I am really proud of the textures in this one too.  I spent a good bit of time on them and I am glad it shows through.  I only wish that I could translate this into my digital work, but for some reason they just don't turn out quite right. ;_;

As for the costumes, blame Downton Abbey and my family obsession with period pieces from  British television.

Have to try it one time (Murmeli and I have stripes, but that's about it). Never tried checks or plaids before. XD

They turned out really well.
Ooh this is traditional? I would have guessed digital. The line-art is so clean.

Haven't seen that one, but I bet it's a good source of inspiration. ^^

Plaids are...they take getting used to.  I should find and post that plaid exercise I did back in the day....oh god.

The colors and some highlights are digital, but the line work and general shading are traditional.  I use pretty hard pencils so I don't have much smudge problem (and I am insanely careful about it while I work too, that helps a bundle.) and when I scan it, I scan huge then down scale before I post.  That way you can't see any of the little imperfections.  I should post a tiny bit of a piece full size sometime.  Then you will see all the horror.

I can agree. Plaids can be even more though than stripes to do in perspective + folds add extra level of difficulty.

Aah, I see. The workflow sounds reasonable. I’d love to do more pencil work too, but my problem is that I tend to smudge all the time and I have to spend half the time cleaning the scan.

I’d love to do more traditional work once the AatR is finally over. I have some new nib pens that I’m really looking forward to try out. ^^

Oh yes. The originals tend to have a LOOT of little things going on. XD

Plaids and Stripes , because I said I would. Wahahaha!

My only suggestions for reducing pencil smudge are the usual: practice till you stop, just be anal-retentively careful about it, or use clean sheets as protective barriers while you work.

Yeah, actually I was looking at pulling out my inks and watercolors and trying that fiasco again...sadly, I fear that I was born to work in dry media.

I guess I have to try that out. My problem is that I usually press too hard while sketching making things hard to erase or alter. Also my erasers tend to smudge a lot.

*teacher mode alert: approach with caution.*
I suggest trying using better brushes and more dry paint. I used to hate watercolor work on school, because the brushes were in terrible condition and it was almost impossible to produce anything clean. With nice brushes and especially smaller ones the brush is much easier to control. Dry paint is also much easier to handle and you can use it to create interesting looking textures like fur for instance. Wet paint is better for coloring large areas and trying to make soft transitions from color to color. It's also important to let the painting dry before moving to new areas. Otherwise you risk paint spreading from one area into another with water. When mistake happens - add some clean water to the area and wipe it with paper towel. It will make the color really light and it's usually enough to hide most of the blunders.

Eraser smudge is the one thing that I have absolutely NO solution for.  I have a select few that seem to not smudge but other than getting lucky and finding those, I just have to clean it up in photoshop.

Yeah, my watercolor teacher preferred the wet-on-wet approach to watercolors and wouldn't hear otherwise.  I think it was a terrible idea and it didn't work at all for me so we clashed constantly.  My colors always ended up murky and I couldn't get a nice clean lines to save my life.  I'll definitely take your advice about the drier paints.

Yeah, the smudges can be a real pain while working in the traditional media - especially in the water color work where you can sometimes see the erased lines where you pressed too hard. -.-'

We were also though mostly wet-on-wet. I personally don't use it that much except for creating background effects and gradients. Wetting the paper a little bit first lets the colors flow more smoothly, but also makes it a little bit more hard to control. On the other hand doing wet-on-wet can create pretty cool effects. You'll have to experiment to see what works for what.

Vidalia Vidalia, girl won't you tell me whhhhhhhhhyyyyy--sweeeeet Vidalia, you always gotta make me cry! XD (Country song. Sorry, couldn't help it.) Seriously, great character art here! Am I wrong in thinking Vidalia and Mina could totally get along? XD (Especially with the whole "unconventional" hobbies thing.)

I'm not familiar with RPG's but if your supposition about Vidalia is true, couldn't the baggage-loaded young man make it a triangle of romantic conflict? An old trope, yes, but it never fails to intrigue, if done right. And, of course, it is a VICTORIAN British conflict...expect plenty of both shy blushes and poisoned but polite courtesy amongst all three points of the triangle.

Romantic entanglements always make for fun stories. XD Especially when the sniping is more subtle with polite snubs and jabs. XD

Girl A has a crush on Woman B, who loves Girl A, but she also
has feelings for Younger Man C. Younger Man C is powerfully in love with Woman B, but dosen't understand why Girl A and Woman B look at each other THAT WAY, and why Girl A is glaring at him like she wants to poison his tea. All the while Woman B wishes she could have both of them, which dosen't sit too well with Younger Man C and Girl A. As far as triangles go, this is a steel cage death match.

Indeed. So ladylike Vidalia is, and such passions twisting her into knots. If they had TMZ back then, they'd be all over it like an ambush.

WRONG COUNTRY.

That's a good question.  I know things would start out properly cordial, that's for sure.  When the blood starts flowing though, who knows!  Vidalia was a bit of a paladin-type with specific issues with the undead.

Well, Mina is a good guy. She's willing to get her hands dirty, but she works hard to keep the bloodshed down. She doesn't enjoy or like killing. She'd much prefer to talk or use intimidation than have to use her powers. Mina tries to play nice with peeps. XD Unless of course they try to ill her. And with her SPF2000 and synablood, she's almost normal. XD

Seriously, thank you so much! It makes me stupidly glad that he is coming across as precious as he was for us.  Rupert's adorableness was a running gag through the whole campaign.  No one could resist his unassuming nobility and charmingly sweet naivete.  He...had to get rescued...lots...
