“Well, that’s bloody eerie,” Tom said flatly. There were three crooked, half-rotted wooden signs nailed to the post. One was no longer legible, one pointed to our right and advertised hunting grounds, and the third pointed straight ahead with “WILLOUGHBY ESTATE – 2 MILES” clearly written upon it.

“Two bloody miles!” Tom cried above the now-drenching downpour. “In this? We’ll be drowned before we reach it!”

“We’ve not got a choice! We can’t go back to the town now,” I said miserably.
