What happened to him?
I think I know, after losing to Sully that was what sparked their rivalry, after being kick out of ROR, and with mike being expelled he had no one, no one but the people reminding him of how he blew it at the scare. Randy turned his back on his fellow monsters, he became cruel, heartless, with a need to be the best because in some ways he doesn't want to go back to the torture, loneliness, and shame he felt.

He's so cute here! I just saw MU this morning and I loved him in it. He's so awesome when he's a shy nerd who's best friends with Mike. Why did he have to turn?! He's so creepy in MI, but I still like him as a character because Steve Buscemi does the voice for a lot of animated characters that I really like.

I am really really looking forward to this, but I can guess Randall's story might not be very happy, and I'm so worried that he will be hurt badly or something 
We are all so worried about him!! But it's nice to know what really happened to him finally...

There's already people saying Randall's story is going to be tragic as hell just by comparing what he looks like in the first movie (his 'future' as it were).
Lets face it Randall was hardly all that pleasant in the first film to other monsters in general, and while that could be down to a variety of things occurring in the film still, he seems to almost have a completely different personality here.
Makes you wonder if something else happened in-between then regardless of plots and competition with secretive bosses. I think SOMETHING will happen to sour relations in this film between him and Mike in this movie- I mean clearly there's no love between them in the original movie and they don't act like they were ever buddies when they're working in the factory, (and it'd probably confuse people if they left it peachy-keen in this one at the very end- unless they want yet ANOTHER prequel just set after this one o_0) though it does add a possibly interesting bitterness angle from both their ends. It suddenly seems it could be a lot more personal then it was. (Which for all we knew their hatred of one-another was fueled through competition and both their immaturity etc. before this prequels information came to light).
Maybe Randall feels betrayed when Mike becomes buddies with one of the 'annoying jocks'? IDK. Bitterness can do a lot and can take a long time to get over if at all. Some people can hold grudges like that, and honestly BOTH Mike and Randall seem the type to do that (hold grudges) in the first film. They're pretty alike in some ways. And well, they're just first years in uni/college, they still have awkward high school mentalities to deal with in some respects. Randall's going to be a nerd it seems. Adorably weird in some ways but a nerd. He's not going to care for jocks very much and even if Sulley does apologies for whatever it is he does he might not care to forgive. Because well- jocks. He's possibly had enough dealings (or perhaps just one really bad one) with them to think he's safe writing them entirely off as a worthwhile sub-group to trust. He's not going to like them or necessarily trust them at all. Hell, I've seen people ponder if Randall hated Sulley before this movie came to light because to Randall scaring was an 'art' and for Sulley it was a 'sport', which was certainly possible.
I'm actually interested to see what happens even though this movie seems to play on the idea Sulley and Mike only first meeting in college- when in the first movie it seems they knew each other from grade school. Could be an interesting character study nonetheless! I hope its fun in any case.

I am standing by my belief that the majority of what happened to turn Randall into such an angry, bitter individual we saw in "Monsters, Inc." took place after he started work there, and was the direct result of Waternoose's deliberate manipulation of both Randall and Sulley. To get Randall to agree to building that machine, Waternoose had to take him waaay outside of his "comfort zone", and Randall's comfort zone involved being successful and earning respect and admiration. He has a very fragile ego and deep-seated issues with low(yes, LOW) self-esteem and a strong inferiority complex, probably due to family issues from childhood. At some point, he started to gravitate towards Waternoose as a father figure, a surrogate dad, and Waternoose realizes this and takes full advantage. Pay attention in the movie to the Scare Floor scenes when the monsters are working; both Randall and Sulley fill their Scream canisters, but while Sulley gets 100 points, Randall only gets 75. That would be like two people taking the exact same test, getting all of the answers correct, but one person scores a 100 and the other gets a 75, a D! SOMETHING was up with that! Now, stop and consider all the stress, sleep deprivation(for over 2 years), and lack of rest in general, all the time with Waternoose breathing down the back of his neck, while trying to earn the old CEO's approval in the way that a son wants the approval of his dad, that Randall would have been dealing with, and you can probably factor in the usual Real Life crap like overdue bills, etc., and it's easy(especially if you've been in the work force for a long enough time yourself) to see how Randall would have simply "snapped", driven to the edge of sanity and pushed right over that cliff. I'm sure that to Waternoose he was no more than a piece of paper, to be crumpled up and tossed in the trash once it lost its usefulness, though.
