Description Arbok (the Cobra Pokémon) is an uncommon Poison-type Pokémon found among grassy fields within the Kanto, Johto, Kalos, Alola and Kitakami regions as well as the Sinnoh region on rare occasions. While they might not be among the most powerful of Poison-type Pokémon, Arbok are frightening creatures that can more than make life difficult for intermediate trainers in battle. Granted, their chest pattern might only work at frightening the young or inexperienced, but things will more than become an issue once your Pokémon gets constricted to the point of no return!

Ekans and Arbok are closely related to both rattlesnakes and cobras despite their otherwise disjointed relationship and tend to change form as they age to suit their particular needs in battle, with Ekans taking on the form of a rattlesnake to deter predators with a traditional rattling noise while Arbok take more after cobras for the point of inflicting fear. Both creatures, however, live remarkably similar lifestyles. Both Ekans and Arbok are rather small at first but gradually grow in size as they age, adding segments onto their bodies until they eventually reach an inordinate length near the ends of their lives. Both of them are fairly common sights in grasslands and are easily distinguished from their surrounding environment by the bright colors of their body, but are otherwise unnoticeable as a result of their silent body movements and quick reflexes. In the daytime, these creatures will actively hunt whatever prey they can to survive and will curl their bodies around trees during the night to avoid being easily whisked away by predators or other environmental conditions. Ekans and Arbok both see the world through thermal vision and are attracted to hot objects that move quickly, occasionally leading to accidents with younger children and hot food in picnic scenarios. Lastly, it is noted that both Ekans and Arbok use their tongues as a way of sensing the ambient air temperate around them as well as detecting minute vibrations in the air that might possibly indicate the presence of hidden prey nearby.

Upon evolving into Arbok, these creatures finally gain the ability to mix their poison with their Bite attack to create painful marks sure to put lesser creatures in the hospital, additionally becoming able to utilize the powerful Crunch attack immediately after evolving as well as the Thunder Fang, Ice Fang and Fire Fang attacks. Because they are not extremely powerful or defensively strong, Arbok rely on the complex pattern of scales on the surface of their hood to intimidate others, spreading their bodies wide to reveal the glorious pattern quickly and suddenly to approaching targets in battle. Although this pattern does little to deter the actions of stronger creatures, smaller creatures tend to either run away in fear at the very sight of it (in which case Arbok will chase them down with a vengeance) or stand transfixed with fear, at which point Arbok will take the opportunity to encapsulate and constrict the target until they stop moving. While their Poison-type powers are strong enough to make hunting a simple task, as is their noteworthy tenacity and penchant for hunting down prey no matter how far away they go, Arbok equally prefer to use their long, muscular bodies to constrict their prey and opponents to death with enough force to flatten a steel oil drum. Interestingly enough, it has been confirmed that the actual pattern present on an Arbok depends a great deal on their region of choice, with over 20 different patterns having been confirmed globally. Needless to say, despite the fact that they are unable to utilize any truly powerful Poison-type attacks until fairly late in life, Arbok are resourceful, intelligent hunters that can prove to be a handful in battle, as escaping from the clutches of their Wrap attack is nearly impossible and their capacity to utilize their belly patterns and devastating Glare technique makes them a serious threat to younger creatures unwise to their ways.

Volatile to approach on any day and a serious threat to unarmored creatures in battle, Arbok are fierce beasts that more than make up for their lack of combat effectives with sheer ferocity and a wickedly powerful constricting ability. They might not be able to last very long against more experienced fighters or any creature with access to decent special attacks, but for budding trainers looking to get a leg up on the competition, these creatures can at least provide some serious power at a fairly early age. Just make sure not to have them bite you if you're into building up an immunity against snake venom; when it comes to the actions of these cobras, their bite is truly far more fearsome than the venom they secrete, a fact that the resulting scar will tell for years to come!

These things strike fear into many small Pokémon, and I know this because it actually happened to my Oshawott. We saw an Arbok in a forested area choking a Furret. What happened next was...well, I don’t want to go into detail, but let’s just say there was a lot of blood. This terrified my Oshawott, even to the point where it had a nightmare on that night. I was trying to help it calm down so it wouldn’t get anymore nightmares, unfortunately we came across that same Arbok and it attacked my Oshawott (you could tell it was the same one because it had blood stains on it’s body). It actually almost took my Oshawott’s life away from me, but I managed to save it and knockout the Arbok with my other Pokémon. Don’t worry, Oshawott got better, but this event caused him to have nightmares for like a week straight. It wasn’t easy, but he’s finally calm now.

O'm sorry to hear that, but yes, Arbok are incredibly intimidating creatures and are not to be trifled with.

Yes, the basilisk could paralyze a victim by looking at him or her.

Yes, that is quite true.

if you get paralysis from staring at an arboks pattern, will the arbok get paralysis if it stares at its OWN pattern thru a mirror?

Mutitus In reply to ComannderrX [2014-10-18 00:07:56 +0000 UTC]

No; it's based on fear alone, so an Arbok has no reason to fear its own scale pattern.

According to Agatha the Ghost type elite four of Kanto Arbok display different abilities depending on their patterns to the point that one pattern represents death, I have taken the liberty on naming some patterns, The Gorgon pattern which would be the most common, the Mamba patter which is Possessed by Arboks with incredible speed, and the Basilisk pattern which is possessed by very few but rather deadly Arbok. It is rumored that Agatha's Arbok has the ability to switch between all six patterns by a snap of her fingers. Also Arbok have a rather particular defense mechanism and escape tactic if their body is cut apart even if the head is severed from the body as long as the head remains intact it can regenerate its body completely and escape while the severed part of its body moves around to serve as a diversion.

The police in Ahodi have spotted several graffiti vandalisms with the Arbok pattern... intriguing, ain't it?

Also, these buggers are scary. They've gotten to over 30 feet over here.

And indeed; they might not be that powerful, but they can still be more than a bit frightening initially.
