Description
"The Dreams in the Witch House" is a short story by H. P. Lovecraft, part of the Cthulhu Mythos genre of horror fiction. Written in January/February 1932, it was first published in the July 1933 issue of Weird Tales.
Brown Jenkin is the crawling familiar of Keziah Mason, an accused witch who disappeared mysteriously from a Salem gaol in 1692. This familiar is "a small white-fanged furry thing", "no larger than a good-sized rat", which for years haunts the witch house and Arkham in general, "nuzzling people curiously in the black hours before dawn".

The disturbing little runt that is Brown Jenkin is one of the most difficult things to illustrate without making it comical (although the image of a rat with a human face nuzzling a sleeper will still elicit shudders and is one of the most disturbing images ever pictated in my mind).
That said, this is one of the few depictions that gets it RIGHT!
Essential to any illustration of Brown Jenkin is the lighting and the face. Here, both are done in an extremely effective manner. Part of the genius is the non-descript background, allowing the viewer to focus only on the repulsive little creature before us. Going with a slightly conventional but effective turn with the under-the-face ("footlight") lighting, Brown Jenkin's face is masterfully set, snarling and drooling at the viewer. The eyes of Keziah's familiar are eerie and well done.
All and all, a brilliant depiction of the little creep.
