Wowza... okay that's weird, I was looking up GSDs for some art (cos I get the colours wrong EVERY time) and I found this. Haha, I remember DR, what an epic site, I'd been a regular when it closed down, random to see everyone still out there

But hey, I love these GSDs, mind if I use them, just as colour reference, I think I need to go back and decide EXACTLY what colour my GSD is going to be... didn't realise there were quite so many variations...

Aw, and the whole time I've been convinced they could only be in three of these colours
Can they seriously be grey, brown and liver and tan ?

OMG! The white one looks almost exactly like my German shepard Cassias! except he has golden eyes instead of the normal Chocolate brown, so Casssy-bear kind looks like an artic wolf. Nice job by the way!

My grandad had three of these guys. Roy, Bruno and Flint. I didn't know the first two, but Flint.... OMG... He was a nutter. I was about 6 years old when he died. I was incredibly upset because me and him were so close. But he was an old dog, yet he acted like such a pup.

Panda shepherds and black and white shepherds are crosses between german shepherds and bordercollies.

no-- dogs of any breed can have white markings. That's why you'll sometimes see a lab or a black pug with white on the chest, toes, chin. It does not mean the dog is not of pure blood. In GSDs, white spotting is recessive. If you do research, you will find on various sites of breeders who have bred "panda" shepherds simply from "mutations"- the white spotting gene- and continued to breed them.

neither are whites, yet some of the early GSDs were pale in color.

The all white GSD and the all black GSD are now thought to be a good color for the GSD's but if it has white markings on when the color is tan and black or just black or grey brindel it is not.

such can be said for Poodles-- despite the fact that early poodles were piebald, it is now discouraged (I have a black Toy Poodle with a little bit of white, in fact). Some breeders are wary of white spotting in some breeds because it can be linked to deafness, but for the most part, that's only if white (and not light phaeomelanin or albinoism) covers so much of the dog that it's ears are also white (which is why white boxers and Dalmatians have problems with deafness). But white on the paws, muzzle, tail tip or even irish spotting and such really isn't going to cause any harm.

Horand's grandfather was white I believe (Shepherd people will know who Horand is). And yes Dalluver is correct. White was an early color used, but not desired in Germany because it was believed to be linked with paling of the genes aka a weakening of the breed. (not true of course).
If you look at the Shiloh Shepherd (Which is really just an old world GSD, no reason at all to make it a seperate breed), that is what most early Shepherds looked like.
Panda is not at all a phenomenon, no more than Blue Merle cropping up in Chi's recently. Granted I think its an icky color on a GSD (black sable lover!) its just a color. Personally though I see no reason to make Panda colored GSD's, or White GSD's for that matter, a seperate breed at all. GSD is a GSD is a GSD.

On a more related note, very nice art XD.

Oooh so nice Are these for DR or FP? And I think the liver and tan one is prettiest. And hmm...panda....I totally forget all about that color when I am coloring GSDs.

Really good! I'm uber bored 'cos DR isn't back up but I've been starving myself from my art for some reason. I saw two sable GSDs today, one was really nice the other was old and sour though XD.

YEZ U DID THA PANDA!!!11!!!!11!1!1

Haha, n00b moment. Though, maybe next time add some silver and black flecks and ticking to the sable? c: Like grey sables; they're called "wild wolf dogs" because their coloring looks like a wolf's, and wolves are usually agouti.
Oh yeah, and the bi-colour black and silver is usually just called blanket black (RANDOM FACT ZOMG). And the red sables are almost exactly like the grey sables, only instead of a silver base, they're a slight tan.

You're so good at drawing different breeds! All I can draw are... umm... German shepherds. And Dobies.

xD okay. I didn't do a silver sable because coloring it would have taken too much time I didn't want to spend. I found this awesome site with GSD coat and color patterns: [link]

I was going to add ticking to the tri, but I forgot...
