Description I am an official blogger for the birding festival, The Biggest Week. I enjoyed five days in Ohio with birds and friends. The weather did not fully cooperate, but we still made out like bandits with the birds we saw. This Sora was photographed while we were eating lunch from the car. It was raining and we parked the car next to the marsh where we spotted the bird on another day. We immediately saw it, but it bolted into the reeds. Using the car as our blind, we waited as it came out once into the open to forage. It was raining, but the bird was so cooperative, that the weather did not ruin our photos.

I have lived around Toledo all my life and have never
seen this bird. Love your photographs! Keep up the good work.

Thank you! They can be very difficult to actually see.

Whoa, awesome photo of this shy little guy. Such a pretty species too, I think we get them over here on some very rare occasions as well every now and then. They're really handsome, it's awesome that your photo is so nice and clear and evenly lit without harsh shadows (rain is good for something it turns out!) that you can actually see all those marking details. Also, I love the little droplets on his back, like little pearls. Wonderful shot!

Thank you! Overcast is good for even lighting, but many of my photos came out blurred from a slow shutter speed (and he kept moving). It was a real treat to actually see this bird though!

Oh darn I had not even thought of that yet! yeah, tough balance to strike then between enough light and too much of it. But like you say, seeing the bird with your own eyes is the real prize!

interesting pic ! it seems to be a characteristic of crakes and rails that sometimes they skulk, sometimes they strut, and there is really no way of telling which they are going to do before they do it.

You re absolutely right about that! One second, he was foraging, the next he booked it. I have a (blurred) photo of him taking off!

It reminds me of the "spotted crake", living here in Germany. Great shot!

Thanks! He did keep moving - and, of course, the only time he paused was while something was in the way!!
