I know this picture is sad, but damned if Hans' mother doesn't look good for a woman who's had thirteen pregnancies.
I really feel bad, though; it feels like Hans got the shaft by being shoehorned into the villain role. He didn't have to be. He and Anna could have just realized they weren't really in love and the story would have remained largely unchanged.

If this is what really happened to Hans back in his childhood, he must have not had the most perfect loving family as one might think, no matter if you're royalty or not. Anything like this can happen, even in the royal household. There is always bound to be someone who is unloved for whatever reason. It doesn't justify his actions, but even villains tend to have a story to tell. I've always hated the "evil for the sake of being evil" phrase without telling us more.

Thats the really cruel part about Han's character that you don't learn about til later it was always the cruelty and negligence of his family that twisted him into who he was.
In truth i like frozen but Han's as a bad guy felt kinda forced even if they did a good job both subverting and foreshadowing it all. It really would have made more sense if the weaseltin guy was the actual bad guy what with him trying to kill Elsa first.

Too bad in "Frozen Fever" he was covered in horse **** in the end, and it still makes you wonder if he feels any kind of remorse yet for anything, such as thinking about the cruelty and negligence of his family, questioning himself if maybe they were right all along about him to begin with, before that giant snowball came by.
It did feel kinda forced to have Hans turn into a bad guy just like that, instead of someone who only wanted to do what was right for once and later realized he and Anna were not really meant for each other after all. The Weselton Duke probably should have been the only true villain.

Kinda seems like a theme now doesnt it? I watched zootopia yesterday and i thought the same about the conflict. They seem to be inforcing the theme that monsters are made not born

I just discovered a book titled "A Frozen Heart" on Amazon website which finally reveals Hans' background, showing he was not born evil at all, but had several of his brothers who were terrible to him, even his father, and his mother was the only one who cared for him, yet he still desired to get away from his abusive family and show that someday he can be as good a king as them, but can never happen in his home. He's at least lucky that he wasn't banished from the Southern Isles, otherwise he'd have no place left to call home.

my head canon is that han's mother was a servent girl who the king had a night with and that's why his brothers treat him like dirt

This is why children manifests bad traits of their family and they will do the same thing in the future. This is the problem of modern day people nowadays, especially when it comes to bad parenting.
But it is their choice either to follow their footsteps or make a difference.

Apparently Disney confirms that this is exactly how Han was treated by his family.
Doesn't excuse what he did, but still, this definitely earn him some sympathy...

Nothing can excuse his actions, but I think that we don't know who Hans is. In the ''betrayal scene'', I'm sure, he was pretending to be worst than he is. He was so theatrical.
