Description
The damage to this bridge over the river Dulnain occurred in the 'Muckle Spate' in 1829, a great flood affecting rivers coming from the mountains of Cairn Gorm, where it had rained heavily. I visited the floodplain of the river Findhorn recently, which was created for such a 'every 200 years' event. See photo below. This area was under several meters of water during the Muckle Spate. Fishing boats from Findhorn harbour had to rescue stranded villagers. Despite the loss of lives and homes, the Scots never lost their sense of humour. At a narrow and deep canyon of the river Findhorn, a butler caught a salmon with his umbrella at water levels 15 meters above normal.
