Description Please note that this is ENTIRELY MY OWN PROCESS, and not the be-all-end-all on how to draw comic strips. I should also mention that I do it all traditionally, by hand, and make touch ups in photoshop when the need arises. I also letter by hand, and recommend it for people who want a more "home-grown" look for their comics.

MY MOST PRESSING/PERSONALLY SUCCESSFUL PIECE OF ADVICE HERE: hashing out the dialogue beforehand is the most helpful thing in the world and makes the process of drawing the actual strip a million times easier/faster.

I'm sorry my process isn't that interesting ;U

hmm doesn't help for those who are trying to make new stories or new worlds...but does help get element of getting it done. Hey could I just point to yours say this how it done right to my folks...I am middle of writing dialogue and direction for comic aka manga where it goes. so far I'm trying to prevent kill of all my characters so far developing the image of characters versus the monsters seem to epic struggle.  I see them in dreams it must be nice to add it to paper...

Thanks for putting this up. Whenever I sit down to ink a page, it's a zen-ish process for me to be able to take a deep breath and say "Words. Balloons. Panels. Everything else." It takes a lot of the anxiety out of staring at that penciled, but largely blank, page. It may not be the only right way, but it's so helpful that I just have something consistent to do each time. Especially since it's really effective.

You're awesome! Thanks for everything! (Art, tutorials, being the coolest)

Definitely a great crash course on how to Sakana! I love this-its not too convoluted and shoot from the hip kinda tutorial. I see you include the actual word bubble in the final drawing instead of adding them after the fact in some digital editing program. What made you decide to go that route? Are there problems with this kinda comic if you wanted/needed to translate it into another language?

Thank you SO much for this! I haven't had the courage to try and put stories into comic form (because I can't figure out when you need to use different shape/size boxes in different situations) but your tutorial gave me a little motivation to try :3

GOOD WORK

I've been trying to figure this out for what feels like forever but how do you scan such a large piece of work so perfectly, what size scanner do you have? Is their any public places that allow scanning cheap?

These might be extremely stupid questions but I really want to know; I prefer drawing larger too, but trying to scan is just a hideous process that infuriates me to no end and if there is a bigger public scanner out there, I'd rather just go there instead of buying a new scanner and if there isn't I want to know what would be the best to scanner to get.

Sorry this is so hella long, but I just have to find out and you seem like the best person to ask.

P.S. Your inking is flipping excellent.

AWESOME!

Thanks for making this so detailed about your process! I always have the worse time with thumbnails and boarders, so hopefully this will help me better.

Thanks again

That was very helpful!

I was wondering though. Is there a reason you use regular pencil lead instead of those non-photo coloured leads?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MyNameIsMad In reply to Dadrick [2010-09-04 16:39:51 +0000 UTC]

It's not a big deal to me to erase the mechanical pencil after I ink it, so I don't have much of a reason to use the blue pencils :I

MyNameIsMad In reply to Vixii [2010-08-19 17:50:33 +0000 UTC]

i cut the paper in half and work on two strips at a time, and then i have to scan the 12"x18" pages in two pieces and fit them back together in photoshop

I dunno if people ask you this, but did you consider color or did you always want to do them in black in white?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MyNameIsMad In reply to NicParris [2010-08-19 14:05:56 +0000 UTC]

I wanted to challenge myself to make each page work without tones or color! (But I'm also not very fast/good at coloring, so there's another reason :U)

NicParris In reply to MyNameIsMad [2010-08-19 15:29:31 +0000 UTC]

Gotcha! Yea, I defiantly hear ya on the color thing. I always get really stumped in the beginning of my pieces when I'm coloring them. Either way, I dig your comics!

THIS IS AWESOME. THANK YOU. I REALLY LIKE SEEING THE PROCESSES OF OTHERS.

MY PROBLEM CURRENTLY IS THAT I DO NOT MAKE THUMBNAILS HIDEOUS ENOUGH. )8 YOUR SHORTHAND SYMBOLS FOR THE CHARACTERS ARE ADORABLE, THOUGH.
