History: Souma is a teacher's child. His father is a history and English teacher and his mother is a PE and biology teacher. As teachers they would set a high value on his education. That's why he got quiet good grades at school. Other students would ask Souma for help regarding school stuff. Souma wasn't bullied and even got some friends. He still wasn't very close to anyone, though. His mother was pretty good at sports, but Souma didn't get much from it. As long as it was just theory he could do it, but practical he was bad at it and basketball was no exception.
After he met Toshi, who became his best friend, he started loving basketball. They played together, often and Toshi encouraged him to not give up on it, even though Souma was really bad. When they went to different highschools, they parted with the promise to meet again on the court, though. Souma intended to join Seirin's team as player, but he realised he wasn't skilled enough. Wanting to be a part of the team anyway, Souma applied as manager.

- he sucks at practical basketball, he loves to play it though, even if he just loses
