Description This is for *girltripped 's contest, which I just found last night. I've been working way too long on this, and some of the mistakes are frustrating me, but I must submit it before the deadline. What an adrenaline rush trying to do this in one night!

The photograph that I referenced is here .

I just love the photograph so much, there's no real way I could improve on it - but I enjoyed doing a classical style portrait, it was a lot of fun. It was also a unique pleasure to draw from such a beautiful photograph, it makes me long for the days when I could draw from life in my figure drawing classes.

The reason I chose this photo, is because there is a lot of emotion in her eyes. The tension in the photograph is not from an unusual pose or angle, but rather - the model's expression. There is a mystery there: why is she so sad? Why is it she must be so brave, to not shed a tear? I love the story in her eyes, I love how classic and timeless the photograph is- it was a great pleasure to draw.

Thanks to Wolf & Winter for the contest, it was great to see all the other deviations everyone came up with as well.

Beautiful tones, I love how you cropped the original photo. You're absolutely right, the expression in her eyes is beyond anything possibly achieved by pose or angle. It's simply... amazing.

Thank you. Yes, I chose to only paint part of the photo instead of the entire composition because I really was drawn more to her expression than anything else. Thank you. I can't take credit for the model's expression, I only tried to paint it There are a bunch of mistakes in this painting, but I'm glad you enjoy it!

i am inpressed by how smooth you can get her skin. you wait till you see my painting - it looks like an impressionists

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mynti In reply to lightandshadow [2006-09-20 21:02:51 +0000 UTC]

hehe, all my work looks impressionist till a couple hours later after I've worked on it loads... It's just working over the same area until it gets smoother. Try lower opacity brushes to blend

lightandshadow In reply to mynti [2006-09-21 05:05:48 +0000 UTC]

thanks. using lower opacity really takes some skill - i find with my rough technique i go over what i have already done in the low opacity and it strengthens the colour in the doubled patches. not good

Verticae [2006-09-18 12:50:15 +0000 UTC]

I really love the clean shapes and lighting, but mostly the classic colorscheme. The texture, though suble, gives a very good definition of this being a fairly young woman, yet her eyes have a very deep, old (wise?) look. It's very expressive.

The only thing I think I'd change, is the hair. While it's good the way it is, maybe some extra, individual hairs hanging over her face would be able to give it a more 'living' look. Just an idea, though, I think I might clear that it's awesome already.
