Description My first steampunk piece I wanted to try this style for quite a while and finally got all the materials together

The set consists of a necklace, bracelet and two earrings. Tons of tiny watch pieces are clustered together. It looks great worn, reflects beautifully in the sunlight and has the most amazing subtle tingly chime when moved... I keep lightly shaking my head to hear the earrings chime
I still have tons of watch parts left, so will be working on a few more pieces like this one

Materials used:
antique finish chain and jewelry findings, watch parts

How wonderful. I had no idea what Steampunk was so I Googled it. This is a lovely tribute. I thought this set was aesthetically pleasing even before I read about steampunk, and now I think it especially cool.

Thank you! I didn't know a thing about steampunk until about a year ago. I read up on it and found it to be fascinating. Plus, the steampunk fashion is just amazingly awesome

Ah, but you're young! You have a lot of time to learn! I'm more than twice your age I surely didn't make stuff like this at your age.

Sure, if you haven't done anything like this yet, you might want to start with some courses. Often they offer free lessons at after school programs or community centers. You could also keep and eye out for lapidary clubs, they often have lessons too. Or find tutorials on youtube. Just watching people assemble things often helps you to get an idea on how to do it.
Then, get some cheap material and practice practice practice. Later, when you are more advanced, you can get some more expensive material to make the 'good stuff', but I'd always practice with cheap-o materials first. You can find a lot of materials around the house, too.
I think the main thing is to keep at it and not expect too much. The first few works might not be exactly what you hope them to be, but if you keep on working, you'll improve over time. There are lots of tutorials here on dA, too. Have a peek over here: [link] and you could browse over at [link] there are lots of great tutorials and awesome crafters who will give you advice if you ask for it

WOW!

I love steampunk! This set is amazing! I need to get some watches so I can start a few of my own.

MyntKat In reply to DarkFireRaven [2009-01-30 21:52:04 +0000 UTC]

I got the watch parts, guess that makes it much easier
I would love to have some bigger parts to play with too though, it didn't come with any really big parts

DarkFireRaven In reply to MyntKat [2009-01-31 04:20:03 +0000 UTC]

I need to look for big watches, easier to take apart and such.

Where did you get the watch parts?

MyntKat In reply to DarkFireRaven [2009-01-31 04:46:39 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I'll be looking for big mechanic alarm clocks at thrift stores I'll see how much fun I can have with that
I got the watch parts here: [link]

Tooi [2009-01-28 03:24:30 +0000 UTC]

Very nice.

Was one packet of parts enough for this whole set? I've been trying for ages to find a supplier of small gears and cogs, but they're always so expensive.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MyntKat In reply to Tooi [2009-01-28 04:35:48 +0000 UTC]

Thank you
I thought these were rather cheap, so I bought four packages. I still have A LOT left, so I'd estimate that I used pretty much exactly one packet. There are lots of tiny little pieces in there too though, I'll probably cast those in resin as they are too small for necklaces.

quidditchmom [2009-01-28 00:47:07 +0000 UTC]

Please tell me the cogs and such came separate. I seriously almost killed myself and my cats prying apart a watch. This looks INSANE to have put together. Either you are very patient or you have tiny fingers...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MyntKat In reply to quidditchmom [2009-01-28 02:17:13 +0000 UTC]

Ah, I got the parts here: [link]
So they did come separate, but they all had these tiny screw thingies to connect them to each other, I had to take those off of them, which seriously irritated my skin and broke a few of the cogs
I don't even want to imagine pulling them all out of a watch taking the connection pieces off was bad enough!

quidditchmom In reply to MyntKat [2009-01-28 03:23:33 +0000 UTC]

Wow, thats awesome. I wish mine came like that! I seriously shoved a cog through my thumb. It was awful.

MyntKat In reply to quidditchmom [2009-01-28 04:36:50 +0000 UTC]

Yikes, that must have been painful I already got some little wounds from just getting those screw parts off of the gears
