I'm probably way off here, but I believe the 'story' is the one used in Milton H. Erickson's Hypnotherapy techniques, namely the Tomato Induction (or And A Tomato can be happy) script. It's a technique of Indirect Hypnosis that supposedly allowed Erickson to tell his patient a story about a tomato plant and relieve his pain in the process.
