First of all, I think the composition is nice, and I absolutely love the intense look on this cute guy's face.
What I think is holding this piece back from being really impactful is that it lacks contrast. The line weight is too consistent throughout, and there's a lot of white space that isn't really leading your eye anywhere in particular. If anything, my eye just wanders off the page.
Maybe if you darkened the background a little it would frame him better, or even if you gave him some more dramatic shading/heavier outlines?
