I am not there at the moment. Now I am in Southern California where it is rainy today and slightly cold. I miss that scene though. Thank you.

Where to when you do go. I was born in Battle Creek.

It varies from year to year but currently we drive back to Michigan around April sometime and then back out to California in late October or early November. There are sometimes trips in between those times and we have a dog so we often drive.

Do you live in Asia now? What brought you there.. and out of Battle Creek?

I moved to California after finishing high school, then ended up in the Navy. I've bouncing (mostly) between here and Hawaii since.

So why Michigan? Still have family there?

I have almost no family there anymore, but my husband's family is still there. We don't live near them but it is where he grew up.
I love the state.. especially the west coastal areas and the UP. We have cottages on Torch Lake and a home in Bellaire.
What year were you in the Navy?

almcdermid In reply to myrnajacobs [2011-01-31 06:35:22 +0000 UTC]

Only been to the UP twice, but around the north-west LP, even Torch Lake a few times. Yeah, it's great around there. We usually went to Houghton Lake.

I was in the Navy '73 to '81.

So you are a youngster. ;D My husband was a Navy musician in the early 60s. He was stationed on a carrier.

I know Houghton Lake too. Blizzard going to the whole area today.. it would be fun to be snowed in for a few days.. fireplace, cozy with books and drinks.

Infant. On which ocean was your husband stationed?

If one has a fireplace (and plenty of coffee!) being snowed in could be enjoyable.

My husband was stationed in the South China Sea during tour. It was early Vietnam.

It's even cold here in Long Beach today and tonight. brrrrr... I need a fireplace!

I was there at the end, sitting off the coast, anyway. I first brush with history.

Yeah, a fireplace would be good. Japanese houses/apartments are poorly insulated.

It's interesting, that's for sure. And yes, I basically teach English to businessmen. Maybe not exactly 'teach'; more like facilitate their effort to improve.

Not the best job I ever had, but it's got a couple of points, such as paying enough and leaving me time to write.

Always important for a writer.. a rather or somewhat 'mindless' job that doesn't take up all your time.

It does have that advantage, basically easy and not that time consuming.

The first thing that strikes me about this is the exquisite silver-gray, as if you did this on silver-leaf or even as if it were etched in metal (though it's really photographic and not etched). It has a "print" quality, like the great Japanese prints; the tone here brings out the 'design' of the trees & snow as much as their physical presence. It's almost a blue-silver, and the branches stand out against it in beautiful relief. Hues like this are usually fleeting in nature; but in photography they become everything, a mood extended through all time; and though this is dark, it's almost brilliant, that moment when the sky, snow and branches take on an eloquence, like they're speaking or singing; and the background trees/bushes are so much clearer and sinewy than they might be in brilliant daylight. A moody picture, but with that sudden clarity one sees in fleeting moments as the sun sets and one wishes the universe would "freeze" so we could bask in its forever. A beautiful, inward shot...

Your eloquence in describing my images makes me look again and see them anew. What an amazing writer you are, insightful, gentle and kind. thanks for giving my art back to me and making me see it through the eyes of another. I cannot say enough . . . or well enough, how much I love and appreciate your "comments" (poor word for this kind of critique).

(if I haven't said it before, the art coaxes the words...I wouldn't have them if it weren't for your work! I once asked McCoy Tyner, the pianist for John Coltrane, if Coltrane influenced his piano playing; and Tyner said: "Are you kidding? With playing like that, you find your best music!")

I live in the country. There is a village about 10 minutes drive away but the nearest 'city' is about an hours drive. It's nice for scenery..not so good for some other things.

There are rainbows of color in the sky...is this from the storm that is heading our way in New England...we are suppose to get slammed with up to 10 inches of snow....not another one...this image is stunning.

myrnajacobs In reply to KarenFiore [2008-01-14 02:16:11 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I think it is the same 'storm'. We didn't have a blizzard but it left quite a bit of snow.
