Description Presenting THE COOLEST Cid incarnation Final Fantasy EVER produced! Seriously, this guy rocks. He's my favorite anime character out there, and I figured it's about time I did him some fanart justice.
Cid just cracks me up. He's so cheerful and energetic and obsessed with his machines. He's an inventor/pilot/mechanic that works wonders with anything mechanical. His inventions all bear girl names (like Jane and Elizabeth), and don't you DARE break them, because then you wake up Cid's normally hidden temper and he'll go medieval on your backside. When that happens, his backpack/laptop (that weird mech vest he wears) activates and he pulls all kind of random gadgets out, from robo arms to the gigantic hammers you see in my pic. And in reality, the hammers are supposed to be a whole lot bigger than that. >_O
Final Fantasy Unlimited itself was a great and horrible anime at the same time. It had SO much potential, but because they cut it from the intended 52 eps down to 25 (because of low viewership), it left out a lot, didn't develop character, and just kinda fizzled. That, and the cell animation STANK to high heaven, a total bummer because the studio normally does great art (hey, you think maybe THAT'S why they had low viewership? DUH!! -_-)
In any case, I drew this up realizing I didn't have any Cid art yet. At least not colored. I did a pencil sketch ages ago, but looking back on it now a few years later it...well, reeks. This is much better. I used coloration from screenshots that I have. There are two things wrong with it though, that I did on purpose. One, when he goes battle-mode, he normally pulls his visor down FIRST, while here I depict him just starting to do that AFTER he activates his magnetic hammers. Two, his laptop isn't down, and the joysticks he uses to control the hammers aren't out either. This I avoided because it didn't fit the pose, and because it just looked too akward. Maybe I'll show it in a later pic.
I also tried out a WAY cool tutorial I found online for fancy backgrounds. I melded it with some cloud paintbrushes, and voila! A techno-cool background! Maybe I'll use this method for whenever I do Edward Elric (Full Metal Alchemist) fanart.

Cid and Makenshi were the only reason why I suffered myself through FF:U.

He is pretty awesome. Such a nice guy....until the Earl's henchmen cause damage to one of his beloved inventions.

They're gigantic, magnetic hammers. They slam on either side of an enemy, and magnetize together to form an enemy pancake. They really look like they hurt. >_O It's ironic; whenever he pulls these out, the only two people he uses them on in the series are either A. Immortal and can recover from being flattened (albiet it hurts and takes time), or B. Made of liquid and are therefore immune (and therefore can break said hammers in following fight sequence, darn stupid water baddie...).

Which really sucks, I'll bet. I thought at first they were rocket launchers(which would PWN ASS!!!), but then I realized there weren't any openings.

Oh now there's a character concept; someone with extendable rocket launchers. That could be interesting...

Yeah, the character uses the rocket launchers for long range, or he smashes the enemy with them and THEN shoots the rockets at him at point blank range, but moves just fast enough to pull the launchers back so that he doesn't destroy them in the blast. You see where this guy could end up in a battle?

It rocks! His attack is uber cool (using large magnets is kinda cool!)

I hope all the characters of Final Fantasy Unlimited is in Kingdom Hearts. That would be cool!

I'm faving this! :fav:

This one is by far the coolest. None of the others even come close, in my opinion. The series is worth watching just for him. And two other characters, whom I may end up drawing in the future.
I notice FF tends to alternate between older and younger Cids. Since this came out after FF: Spirits Within that had an older Cid, they apparantly opted for their youngest Cid yet for the Unlimited anime. I'm not complaining; his character design rocks. ^_^

That ROCKS! One of your better works, by far! Looks just like him, only better drawn. ^_~ The background works well. I like the fact that the circle thing is off-centered. Looks good stylistically. Plus, most of Cid's weight is centered to the right (of the space he's standing on), so having the bg focal point hang to the right of the piece works to add a feeling of weight and tension to the artwork.

I'm envious of the amount of free-time you have to devote to stuff like this. It takes me forever to color anything because I'm so busy with school and my webcomic.

I liked the off-center look too. Looks very Tron-ish. ^_^ And now that I've learned that tactic, I can manipulate it for further use in magic circles and the like.
Of course, you being the graphic artist would appreciate the graphical layout, lol.
It actually didn't take me too long. I worked on it on and off for two days while studying for a paper and a midterm. The drawing and inking took me maybe an hour total, and all the computer work (cleaning, coloring, shading) took me another two hours, and the background took about half an hour to 45 minutes...and that's only because I was toying around with the tutorial. One of my quicker pieces of artwork. Either that, or I'm just getting faster at this.

Just for that, I'm gonna deck your avatar. HOW can you be so fast!?!? I've spent an hour here and there ALL MONTH on the Halloween Special for my comic, and it's not gonna look nearly this cool! I can't BELIEVE how slow I am!

Practice? The more you do it, the faster it gets.
