I've never thought that Gargamel was really an "evil wizard" as he was titled.
He always seemed to me to be more of an alchemist.

Yeah he just wanted to find the philosopher´s stone, but, cause he needs some smurf for the Formula (...) he ends absolutely obsessed with finding an smurf and finally, demented with anger and hate just wants to enslave or destroy them.

I actually own the original first 11 hardcover "comic books" of Les Schtroumpfs (in the original French). Peyo was a genuis. I love the stories of Les Schtroumpfs, and hate how American media ruined them.

Yeah, Peyo, and many other French and Belgium artists like Franquin, or Goscinny, stablished a brilliant kind of humor, charging with pure irony against all aspects of our society
