Not a lot of folks really understand it, I'm afraid to say. Back then courtship had more effort put into it, and while I'm not saying folks have to be elaborate and hire a plane to sky write your significant other's name in the sky then make a flower portrait of their visage in a gold frame it doesn't hurt to put out an extra few fifty or hundred dollars for that box of Ghirardelli chocolate and reservations for the fanciest place in your town or the town over.
And you don't even have to do it every month of every year! Like most folks would be happy if you did it every two or three years, to show you still think they're worth the effort. Or, to make it even cheaper, just buy a really nice piece of jewelry or some very nice type of memorabilia from a fandom they like to give as a present and spend the rest of the day cuddling with a deluxe order of Wendy's fries and Frosty shakes plus a marathon of your favorite films.
Then in between the extravagant times - just be with each other. Go to the park and make your partner laugh by waddling like the ducks and geese there. Go to the zoo and buy the cheesy stuffed animals for your shelf. Adopt that little animal at the shelter everyone says is too ugly, too dangerous or a lost cause but you want to give them a shot at life. Of course you won't always be fairy tale happy. You'll have your fights and disagreements - like which is better between Pepsi and Coke(and Coke is better by the way). But if you're really in it to win it and want to be one of those old couples that are still married after meeting each other in the sandbox sixty years ago and feed the birds in the park together, then you'll persevere!
Love really can conquer anything, no matter the gender or race, if you give it a chance.
