CHAPTER 7 | Camp Nightmare - Japan
Part 1. If You Talk That Talk...

In which Maya struggles to control Oogie, when she meets fellow team-mate Rick and his calm mare Misty.

End of March | Year 1

With a bright blue sky and warm temperatures, today looked like a perfect day to be outside under the falling petals of surrounding cherry trees. Despite this idyllic scenery, Maya was anything but relaxed while riding her temperamental mare into the large outdoor arena. Oogie was prancing, whipping her tail around, grinding her teeth loudly… The reason for her displeasure ? Another mare was standing in the same arena as her, and apparently that was an offense to The Boogiemare. Maya tried her best to contain and control her, keeping their distances from that other mare and her rider, who thankfully seemed too busy with adjusting his tack to notice the crazy horse throwing a tantrum near him.

At one point though, Oogie escaped her rider’s control and attempted to charge the other horse, only stopping a few meters away before showing off by stomping her front hoof on the ground to look as intimidating as possible. The smaller mare didn’t react at all, still standing calmly in the middle of the arena. Her rider though looked quite a bit worried by that display of aggression.

“Are you okay ?” he raised an eyebrow while asking Maya “Should I be worried ?”

“Sorry about that, my mare and I don’t really see eye to eye, that’s all” she tried her best to sound reassuring but her visible struggle with Oogie was less than convincing “Don’t worry though, as long as your horse doesn’t react to her antics, you should be fine”

“Are you sure ?” he looked back and forth between his horse and Maya’s, comparing the complete opposite behaviors “I mean, Misty isn’t going to move anyway, she’s just a very relaxed mare in general”

Maya let out a whispering “Lucky you…” as she struggled some more to calm Oogie down.

“You’re Maya, right ? I’m Rick” the young man extended his hand to shake hers but quickly retracted it when the dark Traaker mare reacted to the move by grinding her teeth loudly “Okay… Say, do you need any help ? I could dismount and leave the arena so that you can work without any distraction if you want ?”

“Thank you, that’s really nice of you…” Maya was just about to accept his offer when she noticed that Oogie had stopped pacing and was now standing still next to the other mare, though still with her ears back towards her neck “Actually Rick, do you mind staying for a little while ? I think your mare might be having a good influence on mine”

“That’s what Misty does to everyone around her” Rick proudly petted his mare on the neck “Are you really sure though ? Your horse seems quite agitated to me…”

“She’s actually much calmer than I ever saw her when working around another horse” Maya admitted.

“This is calm ?” Rick raised an eyebrow again.

“Surprisingly, yes !” she laughed a bit “I’ve never trained her in the presence of other horses because of her bad temper, but I think having such a calm mare around might actually be the thing she needed all along to start behaving a little bit”

Rick seemed to be lost in thoughts for a few seconds, until he asked “How long have you had her ?”

“About three months or so…” Maya wasn’t sure why she felt ashamed to admit this “But I still haven’t made much progress”

“Only three months ? That’s nothing !” the young man smiled brightly “I understand now why you two don’t ‘see eye to eye’ as you put it. You still don’t know each other”

“I guess so…” she tried to hide a sheepish smile.

Seeing that Maya didn’t seem too convinced by his words, Rick kept going “You did well to bring her to this Camp, it’s the perfect occasion to create a bond between you and your horse ! And it looks like it’s already working if you tell me that it’s the first time she’s ever been so calm around another horse. I call that progress !”

His positive attitude was contagious, and Maya couldn’t help but smile back at him. She took a look at her mare, noticing in surprise how her ears were not facing that much backwards anymore and she was showing some signs of relaxation.

“Thank you” Maya petted Oogie’s neck for the very first time “I mean, I guess I never thought… I’ve just never seen her like this !” she let out a small laugh, not believing her eyes seeing her mare so calm.

“Well, now that she’s a bit more relaxed, maybe you want to go on and do your thing ?” Rick offered with a smile, ready to ask his mare to move.

“Yeah, I probably should get going before she gets bored or anything” Maya readied herself to move as well “She can be a real queen this one”

“We’ll leave you and your Majesty be, then” he gave her a playful wink “We’re just going to stay around in case you need anything, good luck with your inspection”

“Why, thank you darling” Maya mirrored the wink with a small giggle “Truly appreciate your kind words, good luck to you as well”

They waved at each other as they moved away to different parts of the arena, and although Oogie still seemed unhappy to not have the whole scene to herself, she now accepted to listen a bit more carefully to her rider so they could start practicing their routine one last time before the official inspection. Looking back towards Rick and Misty, Maya couldn’t help but smile at herself, knowing that today she had not only gained more control over her mare but also gained a new friend.

Maya made a new friend \o/ Oogie is calming down ?!

This was a very fun collab/RP between my sister and I that happened back in February and that we finished in April, before completely forgetting about it ^^' Better late than never I guess ?

I'm also very sad to inform you that we weren't able to provide you with the original artwork for this collab. It was an incredible work of art, truly a masterpiece, but we decided that it would have been unfair to the rest of the competitors to use it as it was way too advanced and wonderful. However, we can still show you the masterpiece itself so you can bask you eyes in amazing glory of art : Talent
