Interlude 8-9 | And We're Lost
In which Maya and Raph are enjoying walking together back from their green hunt, when they realize they got lost in the forest.

Less of a story, more of a description of what happened because I was uninspired for dialogues… And it only took me nearly one year to write lol

End of June | Year 1

SETTING : Poland Forest, right after the Green Hunt is over, on their way back

Maya just got back from Camp Nightmare literally a week before she and Raph embarked on their second Poland trip of the year. She is super excited to spend time again with her best friend to the point of being nervous around her, but she blames that feeling on the amount of time they spent away from each other.

They’re walking along a path in the evening on their way back to the base after the hunt, and Maya is completely absorbed in Raph’s random ramblings, finding her to be quite adorable when she lets her train of thoughts go wild and recounts it out loud. At one point, they make eye contact and Maya realizes that she’d been staring, so she averts her gaze but not without feeling a bit of heat in her cheeks.

When Raph asks her if she’s okay, Maya is quick to find a new subject of conversation, stating that they’ve been on this path for a while and hopes they’re close to the base because she’s starting to get hungry. Raph agrees so Maya checks the GPS on her phone to see exactly how long until they reach the base, and that’s when she realizes they’ve been on the wrong path for a while now.

She’s quick to reassure Raph as soon as she starts worrying, showing her the GPS and the route they should be taking to get back safely. In an effort to stabilize the phone as the two horses are walking at a different rhythm, Raph reaches out and places her hand over Maya’s to hold it still. The chills Maya gets from that move almost makes her pull back, and she forces herself to ignore her increasingly fast heartbeats in her chest, though she does have a small feeling of disappointment when Raph removes her hand.

After putting her phone away, Maya instinctively reaches her hand out in turn towards Raph to reassure her (and also because she doesn’t want their hands to stop touching). When Raph grabs it and squeezes gently, Maya swears her stomach makes a backflip and her heart can certainly be heard outside of her chest with how fast and loud it’s beating suddenly. That’s when she realizes that she can’t deny those feelings any longer and that she should call them for what they are : a massive crush on her best friend. Maya now simply prays that the low light setting of the evening can effectively hide her blushing face.

When their hands part, Maya tries to steal one last gaze of her friend before they focus back on finding their way to the base, but this time it’s Raph who is averting her gaze and she swears she catches a bit of pink coloring her cheeks. Maybe it’s just her imagination, a projection of her own feelings onto the subject of her affection, and so she brushes it off pretending this never happened.

And yet another drawing without a story when there's supposed to have one... I prefer to write chapters and side-stories in chronological order even if I publish the drawings earlier for deadline reasons, which is why I have so many drawings that say "story coming eventually"... Hope it's okay with you all :/

Let's talk about the art piece then !

First attempt at not tracing at all when I was drawing Emerald and I think I did okay, though I did revert back to a bit of skeleton tracing for Blues (though less than I usually do). Horses look nice and I loved replicating the Kossak tack, it's so pretty <3 (also Blues is so small compared to Emerald, it's hilarious xD) Still need to work on my background skills though, it's really basic but I'm happy with the overall mood of the whole thing.

HUGE shoutout to my amazing sister Az-Dreamy for helping me a lot with the humans' faces !

The bodies were mostly traced from the refs, but I struggled so much with the faces you have no idea... So best-sister-in-the-world gave me lessons on how to draw faces (and also hair in the case of Maya) ! She actually had fun redrawing Maya in her own style too, if you'd like to check it out : Maaya
