November 2020

Maya waited patiently, deep in thoughts while looking out the window of the bungalow, and partially wondering how thick was the layer of ice that covered the small pound right next to the snow-covered path. Everything looked so peaceful outside. This side of the huge CT grounds was fairly empty, as everybody was most likely still asleep considering how early in the morning it was, leaving the residential area to look like a tiny well-maintained ghost town. However the show was visibly starting again on this new day, as she could tell from the steady increase in activity around the place, while she remained staring through the window for what felt like hours on end. But that was only just a feeling, for it clearly didn’t take more than a few minutes for Winston and Raph go check out the prep needed for the Endurance class, and there she saw them approaching the front door as they were coming back.

“We’re back !” Raph called out as she entered the bungalow, Winston in tow.

“Everything seems to be settled, so it means it’s time for us to get prepared” the older man added, and started grabbing the necessary gear.

It took a few seconds for Maya to finally get out of her own thoughts and react to her team’s arrival with a long sigh. She didn’t even realized that she had sighed so heavily, until Raph turned to her with a worried look on her face.

“You okay ?” the short woman carefully asked as she walked closer.

“I’m fine” Maya answered a bit too firmly for her own taste, and Raph visibly backed down at the defensive tone “I’ve already prepared everything, let’s just grab the bags and go get Emerald”

She ignored Winston’s concerned look and grabbed one of the bags before heading out of the bungalow, only to get back inside when she realized she had forgotten her coat. The temperatures were far from tolerable with a simple sweater, and the cold wind blowing through had just reminded her of that when she had opened the door.

Deciding to let Joe sleep in for this as it was so early in the morning, all three team members headed to the guest stables following Maya’s lead as she walked in a brisk pace. She thought she heard the other two whisper between them behind her back, but she decided to ignore it. The second she caught sight of Emerald in her stall, her thoughts invaded her once again, and she remained eerily silent for the entire grooming session. This was particularly out of character for Maya, she was usually cheerful and talkative, but right now she had a hard time acting like her usual self. Of course, she was well aware of that and the visible impact it had on the rest of her team, but for some reason she felt like actually speaking her mind would only make things worse, so she chose to not say a word at all.

Emerald was now done getting tacked up, wearing the typical tack set of young Kossak Warmbloods. A light blue halter was placed under her nosebandless dark brown bridle, a matching lead rope neatly secured to her sheepskin-covered breastplate. The light blue saddlepad fitted nicely under the dark brown endurance saddle, and blue leg bandages completed the gear, along with dark brown saddle bags holding a water bottle and a first aid kit. After checking that her black boots were perfectly polished, Maya was securing her body protector over her blue long-sleeved shirt, when she caught Raph staring at her.

“Are… Are you okay ?” the younger rider tentavily asked with clear concern in her voice.

“You already asked that question before, and I said yes I’m fine” Maya immediately bit back her tongue when she realized how aggressive that just sounded.

“… D-Did I do something wrong ?” Raph was now staring at the ground, and it was clear in her voice that she was on the verge of tears.

Maya let out a sigh, at first out of annoyance but then out of regret. Of course, with the harsh tone she was using against her hypersensitive friend, it was no surprise Raph thought she was the reason of Maya’s frustration. The look on her face immediately softened as she tried to make eye contact with the shorter woman.

“Hey” she softly caught her attention and smiled fondly to reassure her “You’re good, darling. It’s not because of you, that I can assure you” she pulled her into a tight hug without waiting for a reply.

They stayed in each other’s arms for a solid minute, Raph clinging to Maya’s shirt the best she could for comfort, face burried in the crook of her neck. Only when she heard the sound of Emerald’s hoof hitting the ground repeatidly in annoyance did Maya realized just how long they had been hugging like that, so she slowly backed away and cleared her throat in slight embarrassment.

“You’re good” she repeated as she swiped a tear from Raph’s cheek with her thumb “I promise” she gave her one last genuine smile before turning around.

Winston handed her a thick dark sweater for her to stay warm, and Maya tried her best to hide the frustration in her gaze when she made eye contact with him. He merely gave her a tentative smile, that quickly faded when she didn’t mirror it, instead grabbing the reins and walking away with her mare as fast as she could towards the warm-up grounds.

One step at a time, splashing loudly in the thick layer of snow that covered the ground, Emerald walked as if weights were tied to her hooves. Patiently sitted on her back, Maya let the young mare have her fun for a few minutes before asking her to regain focus so they could warm up properly. When the signal was given for the participants to gather for the departure, it didn’t take more than a slight release of the reins for Emerald to almost jump the start before the officials gave the green light. Maya had to resort to get her mare to trot in a small circle behind everybody, and letting most of them leave to start the course before she could go herself. Even though green horses generally traveled with more experienced horses for this type of competition, the young woman figured that working with strangers would only cause her mare to get distracted, and she didn’t want to be a dead weight to anyone in case they wouldn’t be able to keep up the pace.

Pace didn’t seem to be a worry at first though, as Emerald was happily galloping with a good rhythm along the snowy path at the beginning of the course. But it proved to be a bit of a struggle to get the exited mare to slow down on more difficult terrain. Not because Emerald was being disobedient for the sake of disobedience, but because her general eager-to-please personality often made her try to surpass her limits even when it was clearly unnecessary. However, after slipping a couple of times on the treacherous mix of ice and snow, Emerald finally realized that fast wasn’t the solution here, and Maya let out a huge sigh of relief when the mare finally accepted to slow down to a trot. Once she had regained control, the young woman took the time to look around her and take in her surroundings, and it could be described with only one word : white. The thick layer of snow on the ground and trees made it hard to distinguish any definitive markers, everything simply looked so unifomed, to the point that Maya was sure that if it wasn’t for the fairy light guiding them onto the right path, they would have certainly gotten lost by now.

Despite the many tiny breaks, it became clear by the end of the day that both Maya and Emerald were sort of out of shape for such an intense effort. The dark mare was obviously tired from travelling in the thick snow for an entire day for the very first time in her life, and her rider had visibly completely forgotten how demanding a full endurance course was since the last time she had completed one some years ago. After the sun went down, the pair finally reached the campsite where they would be staying for the night. Having cleared the vet checkpoint, Maya took her time to take great care of Emerald, making sure the mare was as comfortable and warm as possible despite the conditions. Just as she was about to retreat to her tent to get some well deserved rest, she caught Emerald staring at her with a curious look in her eyes.

“Are you okay, darling ?” Maya worried over her mare.

Emerald’s response was to grab her rider’s sleeve with the tip of teeth to then tug gently at it. Or rather “gently” in the way of Emerald, so actually quite forcefully, making her little bell around her neck jingle slightly.

“Okay, okay, calm down” Maya couldn’t help but chuckle at this “I’ll stay with you for a few minutes”

Sliding under the fence of the make-up stall, the young woman took the occasion to check her mare’s blanket once more, but Emerald was still strangely looking at her.

“What ?” Maya asked despite knowing she wouldn’t get an answer.

The mare tilted her head to the side, and let her tongue out of her mouth for seemingly no reason at all.

“I can’t tell if you’re just being cute or if you actually want something from me” she smiled fondly at the demonstration of adorableness.

Slowly petting Emerald on her neck, the mare let her eyes close at the contact, visibly truly enjoying her rider’s company. Maya remained quiet for a while, just taking in that sweet moment she was sharing with her friend.

“You can feel it, can’t you ?” she eventually spoke up again “You know it’s not against you though”

Emerald opened her eyes again, looking even more curious.

“I wish I didn’t feel that way, but I can’t help it” she continued “Do you want to know what’s bugging me so much ?”

An extended tongue with a powerful head bop was the mare’s answer, and the jingle of the bell made Maya laugh.

“You’re impossible, you know that ?” she petted the mare under her cheeks before her smile faded “Well I might as well be honest with you…”

The young woman paused for a few seconds, taking a deep breath before continuing.

“It’s just that… I’m not even supposed to compete with you in the first place” Maya finally admitted “Again, it’s not against you, but when Winston bought you as a surprise for me, we agreed that I would only train you and nothing more. He agreed to this” she bit the inside of her cheek, trying to contain her frustration to the best of her ability “And yet, here I am ! Taking a green horse out through the frozen trails of CT on a competitive endurance course”

Emerald seemed to pick on the change of mood, as she retracted her tongue and lowered her head slightly, but Maya wasn’t paying much attention to her mare at this point.

“She needs experience, someone needs to get her out there, there is no one else experienced enough in endurance…” she had imitated Winston’s voice in a mocking manner “I mean seriously…” she sighed heavily “Not that I don’t agree with these statements, otherwise I wouldn’t have changed my mind and we wouldn’t be here, but still, it wasn’t the plan…”

Maya paused for a second, realizing she had let herself get angry and it had visibly affected her horse. She apologetically petted Emerald’s neck, taking the time to think and calm herself down.

“I know I shouldn’t be ignoring him the way I am” her voice had gone from anger to sadness “But I’d rather lie to him and the others saying everything is fine, rather than bring up the subject again and hurt Winston’s feelings some more” she let her weight settle against Emerald’s side “I know how bad he already feels about all this… So what’s a little white lie instead of hurt feelings, am I right ?” her forced smile quickly faded as she struggled to convince even herself.

The dark mare turned her head to examine her rider once again, pushing her slightly with her nose in an actual gentle manner this time. Maybe she was trying to cheer her friend up, or at least that’s how Maya perceived it.

“… It doesn’t feel right though” she thought back on her previous words “I should do something about it… Maybe I should apologize for being so cold” she paused to think some more “Or maybe… If I talk to Winston, calmly I mean, and explain to him how I feel, I’m sure he’ll understand and we’ll go from there to figure something out…”

Another pause, Maya looked back at her mare who now had her curly ears pointing straight up again, raising her head slightly. The small change in mood made the woman smile.

“Dios, I feel stupid now” she chuckled at herself “It seems like such an obvious solution now that I said it, why did I have to be so upset ?” she burried her face in her hands in shame, and Emerald tugged at her sweater again “I know, I know, and I’m supposed to be the clever one” she said sarcastically before petting the mare between her ears “At least now I know what I have to do : I’ll talk to Winston once we get back tomorrow night, and I’ll apologize for my behavior, especially to Raph…” she paused, remembering how she had made her best friend cry earlier this morning “Poor little cutie deserves a big hug” she finished by embracing Emerald’s neck in her arms.

This decision alone made it feel like a weight was being lifted off Maya’s shoulders, as she now finally had a plan to move forward instead of remaining stuck in that perpetual frustration that she didn’t know how to handle.

“Thanks for the chat, Em, you’re the best listener I’ve ever met” she let go of the mare, but not before planting a soft kiss on her nose.

After having kissed Emerald goodnight, Maya finally retreated to her tent for the night, knowing the two of them still had a long way to go before completing this endurance course, and the second day was sure to be even more difficult than the first. But most importantly for her, tomorrow she was going to make things right.

Hopefully...

After Joe with Echo, now have Maya confessing her feelings to Emerald… Everyone confesses their feelings to their horses, cause they’re the best listeners !

The story used here was supposed to be for Cookie’s Winter Schooling Show, I had started writing it before she passed away. I think you can tell it was a literature show for how much description went into it ^^’

Anyway, I thought it would be fitting to re-use that for this show, readapting a bit of course to better fit the timeline and everything.

Also, here you just discovered one of Raph’s worst fears : accidently hurting someone she cares about.

And one of Maya’s worst weaknesses : Raph looking adorably cute (which is basically all the time).

Leaving the end a bit open to interpretation. Will Maya successfully apologize for her attitude ? Will Winston accept to talk and be understanding of Maya’s feelings ? Or will everything get very complicated with half-felt apologies, bottled-up feelings, and false promises ? You choose

As for the art part, I used this drawing as an experiment for an new snow technique (hope it looks okay) and also try ambiance and lighting a little bit (so much bluuuue), but in turn I kind of neglicted the trees so it’s not really good but hey ^^’ Also I should say that, just like the previous entry, the lines are fairly “old” (early November but I’ve made so much progress in a few months) so it’s not exactly how I would do them now but close enough
