You're supposed not to fight, and if you accidentaly fight, you have to leave the hit mark to fail, so you miss the attack...
Or are you doing pacifist by attacking them, and giving them mercy when they're about to die?

It was my original plan to just mess with the battle system but I guess the poor creature was too weak... Then I was just really lazy and didn't reset it haha
