Description

“The eye is always caught by light, but shadows have more to say.”― Gregory Maguire

Inspiration
This time I have not much say to about this piece. Main source of inspiration: when I was young I was really afraid of dark and plants especially in the darkness. Don't know why but I was always afraid that I will be tangled by them and can't get out or simply I will get lost in a forest. I still dream of once in a while especially when I have fever or when I am ill and I was ill this whole week, with high fever, but today I felt much better and this idea kept popping into my mind even in my sleep so it was time to get rid of it
Orignially I wanted to make more elaborate and detailed, but I think this swirly design fits me better.

Personal note
As you may have noticed the lines are a bit more wider and shakier then normal. It is becasue I still haven't given up to learn how draw with dip pen properly.  Inking took ages as I have not really used to this kind of pen, but I kind of like it how the lines look. I think will need a lot of pracite in the future. Regarding coloring I am still not surehow to color as I had only idea about  lineart.

Love the Maguire quote. I'm going to have to think about that one for a while.

It's not hard to imagine how you could reflect this in a drawing or painting (or, just in life in general), but I'm wondering how I might reflect "the shadows" and the more that they have to say in a dimensional piece like a sculpture.   Hmmmmm......

Very interesting how you describe your inspiration to this drawing.  I know I keep going back and forth, wondering how much do describe the story behind the art, and how much to simply let the work stand on its own two feet.  Don't think there is one simple answer to this question.

(Love how you and your work always seem to get me to thinking... )

(Curious - what did you update here from when you originally posted?)

I love it also
It would be rather interesting to see what you would start with theme light and shadow in a sculpture.

Honestly speaking I wasn't quite sure about those descriptions as well.   For a long time I always said it is not necessary, an artwork should be able to stand on their own , plus sometime it is rahter personal. I always thought it would give a away a bit of the magic so I originally wrote these stories down in a comment if somebody asked for it. But over the years I found that actually some people are interested in these small stories of inpiration or what were the challanges. It gives a bit more insight to it, or something like that? One of my watcher told me in a note that she find these descriptions rather amusing somehow  and thanks to that she feels like she knows me and feel closer connected to the pictures thanks to them.  So that is why I give descriptions at least for more elaborated works or more important works.  Though,  I still think only handful of people read it actually.

Actually I decided to open some of my lineart for coloring and  updated the file to a bit better resolution. That is all what happened

Yeah, like I said, there is no, "One size fits all" answer, and I think as as artist, we go through different seasons.  For myself, I like the background information, because that helps me understand the artist as well as they artwork.  Perhaps the description takes away one kind of "magic", but it creates another.

One of the main reasons why I like DA and keep coming back even with the occasional nonsense, is the way this becomes a place where artists from all around the world can begin to talk a little more deeply, to form a community where we learn from each other, and sometimes even hold each other up.  That's what these comment threads do.

Have you ever tried blogging?  That gives you an opportunity to go a little (or a lot) deeper with the story behind a piece.  I've started a blog site where I try to tell some of those stories.  One example: tryonsculpturearts.com/thin-en… .  You have the kind of self awareness, and the ability to tell the story, which I think would work well in that form.

(Oh, and I did print out one of your line art images to try my hand at coloring...  )

Yes indeed, this small bakcground information helps the viewer to better understand the work itself. I am still debting whether it is good idea to share all, but I think I will keep it this way  at least for now.

Actually I find it kind of sad how most artist comments are most of the time are empty. I think it would give much more option to speak about in the comment threads as well. I like comments a lot, as you already noticed it I think,  as it builts up the community as you mentioned and gives a nice chnce to discuss ideas as well.

Aye... I have tried blogging in different themes, but I doesn't have the necessary love for writing. I always had the difficulty with writing as I always thought I cannot express myself good  with words (plus the trauma that hungarian schooling system caused me. Let's say I had always had major problems with writing classes).

(Oh my, I would be interested what you come up with one of my lines )

Yeah... you do share a lot of personal stuff, more than most people.  Personally, I like that and really connect with that, but you do have to guard your heart sometimes, since people can take advantage of that vulnerability.

I think that comments -- both making comments on other people's art and responding to their comments on your own art -- is one of the things which separate making "pretty things" from making "art".  Real art is complicated and difficult to define, but one of the characteristics is the way that art speaks to people on a deeper level.  When you take the time to comment, you are learning to relate to the art, to "hear" its voice, or even to put that voice into your own art.  It doesn't always have to be deep and emotional, but it should at least have some sort of heart.  We learn so much from each other, if we take the time to listen...

Oh, and it takes time to learn to write well, just like any other art form.  I think you already write pretty well (even in English, which isn't your native tongue!)  You clearly know how to connect with deeper ideas, and can express them.  Yeah... the school system probably tried to beat any kind of imagination and originality out of you... but there's clearly something left in your heart there.   I think there's some gold left in that mine.

(I'll show you if I get time to color that picture. )

Indeed, sometimes I feel I share too much (as you know it is my long running dilemma) and sometimes I think it is fine to do so. That is why I don't share my works recently.... they are just too personal to be put on the web and I would feel rather vulenerable  if these works were to be seen by others. Thus I have a long hiatus recently on my pages,. Maybe when I am matured a bit or when I am over these things I will have the courage  to show those to the word. I try to find the right balance, but it seems to be rather difficult.

I kind of understand what you mean. I think I was the most proud of my drawings when somepbody told me, that she feels so close to the drawing, like it is speaking to her. I thought, at last I am not just drawing pretty things (of course I like to draw pretty things, it would be lie if I denied it as most of mydrawinng is definition of fluffy and cute,  but I am very happy if my drawing touch people)

Maybe  will a give it a go with writing as it seems some people would be interested in the process and the ideas behind each piece, and encouraged me to do so. Those handfull people would worth to try my luck with it. So we will see

Ps1: Can't wait for it
Ps2:Sorry again with very-very-very delayed answers. I will try my best to catch up,, but it seems I still need some time.

Yeah, 'tis the ever present dilemma of the Internet --  the freedom to communicate with almost anybody in the world, and the risk of being abused by people from almost anywhere in the world.  Being older, male, and a bit more crusty, I've developed a thicker skin... but then I turn around and put all these very vulnerable pieces up.  The moment you become true, vulnerable, sharing your maybe not so perfect feelings... someone's going to come down on you with some sort of crude, unfeeling or downright toxic response.

While I wish I could see your more recent work, I understand that there is a time to be self-protective.

The thing is, like you say, it's when we admit that we aren't always strong, or beautiful, or holding it all together... that's when we really speak to people.  Like the Sparrow.... When you say that you understand her and you relate to her, that's when I know I've done something that matters.  Those are the sparks of light which we carry to the world around us, even when we feel like we are walking in our own pit of darkness.

Oh, and don't ever feel guilty for making "pretty" things.  Sometimes "serious" artists think they can never create something that's just plain beautiful.  I hope I never become that kind of "serious".

(Still have those drawings to color.  hmmm.... )
