Description Sketches done from life at the local marine park; Dolfinarim Harderwijk.
They've got lovely bottlenoses there and the most amazing underwater viewing glass, which is really nice if you want to sit your butt down and draw some dolphins (after you've played with them of course).

Very fond of the portraits down below, of the two phinnies swimming together. Their faces look right to me. Also forever fun to draw eyes and that brilliant horseshoe-shaped pupil. Was interesting to see some play-fighting going on between them. Fatty dolphin in the upper right corner was much fatter and much cuter in real life, unfortunately. Again done with pencil but the coming sketches are all in pen (so better quality yay)

Hahaha yep she could do with a little less fish - although it's also partially due to the angles there. She's not a reallyΒ fat dolphin and is still as energetic as everyone else. I do believe it's a little in the genes as well; she together with Nynke, another dolphin, just have this cute chubby wubby look. Can't remember a time when they were thin!

AND YES I ALWAYS MAKE A POINT OUT OF SHOWING CETACEANS THE DRAWINGS I MAKE OF THEM. THEY'RE DOLPHIN-APPROVED

Okay, because it is tremendously hard to actually put into words how cute exactly she is, I have made for you THE MOLLY COMPILATION a.k.a. "please stop it's so cute it hurts" :orig02.deviantart.net/43ba/f/2… Β  In the three left photos she's busy looking at these very drawings, in the right photos she's occupying herself with destroying bubbles.

I have clearly not (yet) done her ultimately adorable face justice.

Omg it's a real dolphin! Holy moly- is being that overweight healthy for a dolphin? She looks like some Beluga-dolphin crossbreed! (though it's not true imagine how cute a booger-dolphin would look ;'D)Β
Gosh dolphins are so fun to watch they always have that playful spark about them and then beneath that they're a dangerous time bomb waiting to go off. I mean they'll play with anyone even if it's tossing a ball around:Β www.youtube.com/watch?v=5pcNer… Of course in the comments below there's those who think dolphins are made of paper. I think dolphins are pretty sturdy and getting hit by a rubber ball isn't going to break it in half. HAHA! It's amazing to see how they come up with their own unique games.
Onto the subject of fat dolphins again- I know there was a dolphin somewhere.. Scotland maybe? That was overweight.. I'm surprised that there even is fatty dolphins out there. Shows you how much I know. :'I

Oh, whoopsyfloopsy it seems I messed this ID up - the dolphin in the pictures is Lucy, not Molly. I don't know why I had it so burnt in my mind that this was molly DX Lucy/Lucille was actually born in Seaworld Orlando, which makes her a cosmopolitan dolphin, which is pretty cool.

At any rate, the photos do make her seem a little more fat than she truly is (with the bending of the neck and such), and I actually think her chubbiness is genetic or at least normal for her. There's several other dolphins in the park (for example Molly, Nynke and Roxy) who also just have this chubby look with the extra fat and 'sunken' eyes. I cannot remember a time when they were lean. And they already look a lot more 'normal' under less, uhh, bent circumstances, like here: Dolphin Jump Β Lucy is in the middle. I am certain they are very healthy Though you're right, in the upper right picture especially she looks like a booger/dolphin cross :'D

Oh and that video is UBER CUTE. The marine facility makes me cringe a little, with so many unsupervised people in the water, but the ball game that's going on is brilliant and pure and beautiful. I love how that little kid does not dare take the ball right from the dolphin's mouth, and so the dolphin keeps spitting it out, and how that older kid joins them in the end and just stands there, looking at that dolphin with the dolphin looking back. Funny to see how the dolphin image seems to be different there; I think that an American kid would have immediately run up to the dolphin for hugs and cuddles or something.

Ahh, there are indeed voluminous dolphins in Scotland, but that's the rule rather than the exception there! The Moray Firth population in Scotland is well known for being some of the biggest, and definitely the heaviest bottlenoses around. They sit at around 4 metres long and weigh in at a whopping 650 kg max. They're adorable fattiesΒ c2.staticflickr.com/2/1435/126… and did I mention they're big?Β s124.photobucket.com/user/chri… Got the chance to see them for myself last year, it was super awesome!

Oh that one's the cutest. She's actually a lady! Her name is Molly, and she is ΓΌber fatty cute. She'd blow bubbles and then bite them so they'd pop into smaller bubbles, and she had the most brilliant face while doing it. I actually have pictures of that, still gotta post em here :'D She's also the dolphin who would come by to check on my drawings! Every minute or so she'd come by the glass, pause, look at my sketchbook, and continue

She sounds lovely! ;; Hnnnn <33 being in the company of a dolphin must be amazing. I could spend hours watching them if I could! I'm sure you had tons of giggles watching Molly.

Oh it definitely is. I've been so very lucky to have been able to spend quite some time with dolphins, both captive and wild (and I'll be amping those experiences up with a whole week amongst bottlenoses in Curacao soon!) Have you never been with dolphins?

That morning, the real stars were the young dolphins. Before the other visitors came to the glass, I played with them for a while. It's really fantastic how enthusiastic and responsive to visitors they are early in the season. They following me around, 'racing' with me along the glass, they bumped their melons against the glass, tried to catch the eraser I threw into the air and marvelled at the moving pages of my sketchbook. One dolphin even turned upside down when I did! I'll try and get some pictures up soon. It's truly fantastic interacting with them

Wow you drew these while watching them through the glass?! Β I highly applaud your talents! For the most part, these guys are pretty hyper and fast, so being able to get some details down of them as you've done here, is just amazing!

namu-the-orca In reply to artfromtheheart92 [2015-03-04 19:45:43 +0000 UTC]

Yes I did! It's so lovely to sit next to them and draw, really peaceful Capturing details from the speed and hectic of a fight is difficult, but I was glad to have some calm and even interactive dolphins around as well. One of the dolphins would actually come to look at what I'd drawn every now and then, pausing or at least slowing down to look at my sketchbook! So that definitely made drawing easier
