The colors and anatomy are spot on. Superb work. Boxers can be very tricky to draw well, as they have such a broad chest and lean frame. But you capture the build of the body beyond perfection. Especially the Boxer to the right. At such a tricky angle, it can be difficult to draw the correct proportions, but you did just that. Bravo! I also enjoy that you drew each Boxer with real tails. Not very often you see Boxers that don't have their tails docked.

I would personally like to see more expression within the Boxers' eyes. Especially the guy to the right. Boxers have such expressive, soulful eyes that truly capture their playful personalities. They are funny, charming and true characters that it is nice to see their characters come to life in portraits. I suppose that is with any dog. :]

Bravo, though! I thoroughly enjoy this!

This is beautiful! The anatomy is great.
I love the eyes, they look pretty! So do the tails and the ears.
The background is beautiful as well. I love it. I wonder how long this took to draw? And what pencils did you use?
I must say, this is a beautiful, pretty, lovely, nice and great pic. This is one of the best Boxer pictures I have ever seen on DA.
I also love the coloring on this. It's awesome!
Once again, this is an awesome pic. I want to draw JUST like you! :3
The Boxer on the right looks interested in something e.deviantart.com/emoticons/b/b… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Big Grin)" />
Heheh, it's a great pic. Have a nice day.

OMG I never knew this was even good, this was only boredom art. This only took me 1-2 hours. And about pencils... hmm actually I never buy any particular brands, and I have no idea what I used. I always buy the cheapest and best-looking pencils at the store. thank you so much for the wonderful critique!

I LOVE this piece! Its so lovely <3 Very well drawn too. Im a huge Boxer fan and the brindle one in the background looks like my little girl <3

I really like the body structure and poses.

It would be nice to see a white one too, as they are often forgotten about D:

Lovely work though, instant fave. <3

Thank you so much! I thought white ones can't be registered as Boxers as the colour is not allowed? Though I'm not a Pedigree show freak so I support all colours.

RomanRottweiler In reply to naravox [2009-05-21 19:55:08 +0000 UTC]

Pedigree shows are a dictatorship- there is a foundation that is trying to get white Boxers and other white dogs into shows. I mean its silly casting out a dog for its colour, isnt it somewhat like racism?
I personally love all colours of dogs, if its tail wags I love it <3

And no problem <3

Ofcourse I understand if the breed HAS to be in some particular colour, like Dogo Argentinos must be white so they can be easily spotted when they are chasing their prey and not mixed with the prey itself. But in 90% of cases it's about Pedigree standard nonsense.

Yay! It's a horrible thing to do to a dog. Their tails give them even more character.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

naravox In reply to MoreThanUs [2009-05-20 15:05:33 +0000 UTC]

I know and it's easier for them to communicate with other dogs. And I have always wondered why they cut their tails anyway? To make them look more threatening? I dont see anything threatening in a dog that has a tail like a bunny rabbit's.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MoreThanUs In reply to naravox [2009-05-20 17:17:22 +0000 UTC]

Exactly it's totally pointless. People say it's to avoid injury's to the end of their tails but surely that is like chopping off a mans foot to stop him stubbing his big toe!
Although some breeds of sheepdogs in mountain regions had them docked to avoid fly strike. I know ear cropping was done to make them look more fierce but that's purely aesthetic and WRONG!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

naravox In reply to MoreThanUs [2009-05-21 08:53:25 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, but I have to agree with some Doberman fans that say that the breed looked better with cropped ears. It did. Cropping ears and docking tails is forbidden in Finland. But I have always wondered why breeders haven't tried to breed naturally pointy ears to the breed? Like using dark Malinoises (they are slender, like Dobes) and then later breeding the Malinois characteristics out, except the pointy ears.

MoreThanUs In reply to naravox [2009-05-21 10:26:02 +0000 UTC]

I think they've banned tail docking in the UK quite recently although ear cropping has been illegal for years. And I agree with you on breeding them with pointy ears. Although I'm quite fond of dobes with floppy ears myself.

Don't mean to jump in about this subject. n.n But tail or no tail - a lot of animals communicate solely with energy, which is translated through body language, in my opinion. Therefore, I don't think docking/earcropping has anything to do with miscommunication on any dogs behalf. That's all I wanted to say. The end. Carry on.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

funlakota In reply to xxnefariousxx [2012-01-20 05:14:21 +0000 UTC]

I dunno. I've seen too many dogs who had their tails partially or completely removed (due to medical reasons) being attacked by other dogs. There seemed to have been a communication problem. Esp. since most of these dogs were friendly, highly socialized dogs who didn't get into fights very often.

But that problem doesn't occur in dogs who had their tails docked as 3-day-old pups. Hence that communication problem argument is moot for them. They already learned to compensate for it by using the rest of their body for communication.

People don't really have a problem when the procedure is done for real medical reasons and not for appearance, but those medical problems occur when the dog is older. Those dogs seem to have trouble compensating. So the communication problem only applies to them. I guess opponents based that argument on these dogs instead.

Dogs are pretty adaptable. I think many of them figure out ways around it eventually. Or they find more understanding dogs to hang out with. XD

Thanks for adding your input on the matter. Feel free to add anything else if you want to.

Ah yes. I can see how this could possibly happen. I have never personally witnessed anything like that. I'm a dog trainer and study dog behavior like it's my bible! Dog parks. Playtime seminars. Puppy Kindergarden classes. And I see dogs communicate a lot with their bodies and expressing their energy through the body. And I can see how a dog without a tail can be possible be attacked, as dogs who have a tail arched high, or completely low are sought after at dog parks to be "victims" to a more dominate dog (this is what I have seen. :3) So I can see how a dog who possibly no longer has the usage of a tail as it has been docked can appear to be a "victim" to another dog. *ramblerambleramble* This is interesting!

funlakota In reply to MoreThanUs [2010-11-27 02:14:17 +0000 UTC]

While I can't speak for all breeds, the reason my state's dog's tail is docked is because the tail made too much noise when the dog wagged it during hunts. And it did that whenever it saw, heard, or smelled game. Pretty odd reason, but I can see hunters getting annoyed when the birds threw away because of that rustling the tail made.

A few dogs do have trouble with their tails that fracture easily, but that's really too uncommon to warrant removing an entire breed's tail.

At least it's done when the dog is young; most dogs who had their tails docked when they were week-old pups don't have communication problems. They learn to do without... which is sad that they have to.

The ones that have trouble communicating are the ones that have their tail removed when they're older, usually due to medical reasons like cancer. I've known about 5 dogs in that group, and all of them get attacked by other dogs frequently enough. Yet none of the spaniels, terriers, etc. seem to have that miscommuication problem at all. :/

I see no reason whatsoever for ear-cropping though. The breeds who get it done are not prone to ear infections. If that was a valid reason, every basset hound and cocker spaniel would have their ears cropped!!

The only real dogs that ever benefited from ear-cropping were fighting dogs. And since that's in itself wrong, there's really no point. (Maybe a few dogs that guarded against predators did too.)

The reason many breeders are recluent to breed in naturally pointed ears or bobbed tails is because first it would be a pain to breed out the other unwanted characteristics. And later the breeding stock could be diminished, leading to more in-breeding. Also I'm pretty sure that bobbed tails can sometimes occur with other genetic problems, like spinal cord problems. Why introduce something like that into an otherwise healthy breed? Or so goes their thinking. Done well, I think things will be just fine though.

Anyways, it's a little odd seeing boxers with such nice, full tails. Usually the ones I've seen with their tail left have ugly crooked tails that look like they've been broken a few times.

Overall it's a very nice drawing.
