Description You probably didn't know this, but I mostly draw in Flash. I love the way it smooths my lines, knowing that I'm creating something that is vector, and the fact that it feels like a raster program when I'm drawing. Only problem is how limited our brush settings are. Above I describe an easy 2-step process on setting your brush up to have a sketchy effect.

Note: This should probably only be used for still images. A shit ton of objects would probably muck up an animation.

Also, I understand that the best way to get a sketchy look is to use phtotshop/open canvas/painter/pencil, paper, scanner/whatever else is your favorite drawing program. This is just an alternative for those (very few) Flash artists who create still images primarily in Flash.

Fun Fact: Tutorial created entirely in Flash (screen caps use masking and background is a multiplied movie clip)

is there any other technical purpose for the object drawing other than trying to get a sketchy effect

I still cant figure out the actual use for that function unless "sketchy" drawing was what adobe is intending for when they made that function.

I'm sure it's not what it's intended for, but I can't really find another reason to use it =S

You can change the color of the object box. Not to transparent, unfortunately. But you can change it to white!

hmm,you change the line color?

I don't personally, but you can change it by: "Edit>Preferences" (CTRL+U) In the "General" category under "Highlight Color", you can change the object drawing's highlight.

well, if you have the bandwidth, download the trial strait from adobe's website. That'll give you 30 days to try it out.

Nice tip, but wouldn't having that many independent objects result in a lot of lag?

My laptop is anything but beefy and I didn't have any lag when sketching the images shown at the bottom of the tut. But I never really sketched out anything with an extreme amount of strokes, so I'd imagine that it probably would lag or maybe even crash. Just remember to hit ctrl+s every 45 seconds just in case XD

...at least I do, anyways. Maybe I'm just too paranoid. I really hate loosing things

No no, precaution GOOD. I lose so much stuff to Flash it's unreal.

oh awesome stuff! I agree this might get too complex for animation but I might dare anyway. I get so discouraged when trying to sketch FBF in Flash because of the limitations on the pen. Thanks for the insightful tutorial!

I guess our brush options are limited because it draws directly to vector. It would be nice to have the option to choose between vector and raster. Then maybe we would have better brushes. At least on the raster end.
