Description My book is here!! Dinosaur Enlightenment: Piercing the Veil on Kaiju Dinosaur in an Age of Disruption. link: www.amazon.com/Dinosaur-Enligh…

Some jolly spinosaurs frolicking on their fat bellies on the tidal mudflats skirmishing over a lungfish. For my post where I discuss the distinct probability that some (but not all) theropods were croc-faced killers; discussing more of the skull texture of tyrannosaurids and comparing the texture to phorusrhacoids; and fleshy lipped genetic monsters!! antediluviansalad.blogspot.com…

Every time I think I have a good understanding of dinosaurs, you come in and break my whole reality. I don't even know what to believe anymore. When did paleontology get so complicated?

Nice post! Good that you go so in depth in what could've had lips and what not. I'm not really sure about smaller theropods with lips being disadvantaged unless they hunted really small things like insects and other invertebrates they had to peck up like birds. Looking at how small monitors that hunt mice and such don't have a problem with lips and foxes sticking their noses in burrows haven't got a problem with it either, I don't really see it necesarry for a small predatory dinosaur to not have lips.
Or do you mean with 'small' the really small guys like Compsognathus-sized things?

For stuff with long upper teeth I've sometimes thought in the past about keeping an upper lip, but reducing the lower lips/pockets. What do you think about such a feature?

Pteranodontids with pseudo-teeth. That's awesome.

Good point about monitors, it is weird though that squamates always seem to keep their lips. Are there any that have open croc like oral margins? They don't seem to grow beaks either...

Yeah YW Lee pretty much says what I am getting at below. A small compy guy hunting small prey would not really have< to diminish its lips but a larger dilophosaur sized guy would likely.

"For stuff with long upper teeth…" For me it depends what species - and what ecology you are talking about. Anything with that kink snouted "pike conger eel" looking snout probably had receded lips.

Ah yes, your hypothesis about beak evolution in terrestrial tetrapods and what that has to do with lips in theropods. Had forgotten that for a moment...
So much diversity possible!

Ah okay.

Dilophosaurus-like was what I meant, but Ceratosaurus also came to mind.
Makes sense that they had receded ones like you did in this post. I guess the front teeth could still have some decently sized lips too as long as they didn't completely cover the teeth?

He's talking about predator size compared to prey, not absolute prey size.
