Description This is part of a portrait swap with the lovely ..also known as NibbleKat.
We decided upon not only a portrait swap, but we chose our faces to be on historical Saints. I chose St. Theresa of Avila for her.

Considered one of the doctors of the Church(or early, pivotal writers), she had a real love of religious life, even as a small child. She could be found playing, 'hermit' in the garden, or giving things away to the poor people on the street while the family was out.
As she reached her teens, her Mother passed away, she felt the deep void of such affection. So, much like St. Therese of Lisieux, she sought Christ's Mother to help her along. Surely, if she was so loving and good to Him, Blessed Mary would be good to her also.
For a time, she was absorbed in the many things most teenagers enjoy, like spending time with friends, getting compliments and the like. She was charming and easily got attention. Looking back, she said that she wasn't really all that happy, doing whatever she pleased and not spending much time getting to know God anymore.
But by 17, her relationship with God was rekindled, when she was sent to a convent school to be educated. She knew then, it was time to get serious, and felt a deep calling to become a Nun.
Shortly after this solidified, she became very, very ill with malaria, and ironically, receieved amazing visions from God. Despite the illness, she was filled with terrific peace and joy. And as she got a little bit healthier again, was set on fire to pray more than ever.
Her visions continued, but when she shared them with the other clergy around her, they were not exactly thrilled. They thought she shouldn't think or talk about it, and played it down-maybe thinking she was exaggerating. But finally, one Priest did believe her, and encouraged her to keep up her interests, pursuing God and His teaching in her life.
The mystical, spiritual side of her life, was even more real to her than our present, physical reality, she said. And sadly, due to the poor attitude of some in her convent, they were jealous or suspicious of her visions and profound moments with God. In addition, she struggled around this particular group of Nuns, due to their lazy spiritual life, which made prayer and devotion very distracting.
Finally, at the age of 42, she decided to start her own order of Nuns, even though again, many were not thrilled with the idea(She was a rebel!). But God provided a way, and it was settled. She guided her nuns not just through strict disciplines, but also through the power of love, and common sense. Her way was not the way of rigid asceticism and self denial. Although she underwent many tribulations herself, to others she stressed the importance of experiencing God’s love.

She was not only smart, she was full of energy and people found themselves easily drawn to her.

In my representation of Theresa, she is resting her chin on her hand, which is holding a scroll of some of her writings. In the other hand, is a quill feather pen, she might have used to write down her thoughts.

I like to think she would have been a lot of fun to spend time with, because she was so energetic, but also deeply in love with wanting to know God. I'll bet she had some really cool stories to tell too.
She is the patroness of bodily ills and sickeness, against headaches, those who are ridiculed for trying to live a holy life for God, lacemakers and Spain.

What a lovely job! I was born on her feast day, and I'm part Spanish!
I prefer the Dominicans, but St Theresa did a very good job at reforming the Carmelites, the men and the woman! Sh had a marvelous mind and heart!!

The story of how, at the age of seven, she set out to be martyred by the Moors has always impressed me. I certainly pray to her for protection against the miserable devil worshippers who love to spread martyrdom around in a manner that both Nero and Stalin would have envied.

Thank you so, so much for all the warm comments. Therese is someone that has apparently wished me to capture her over and over, as so many look to her as a window to Christ. I hope to help 'wash the window', if I can. Thanks again.

Your Welcome. Although I was born on her feast day, I'm very partial to Saint Dominic and the Dominicans. Saint Catherine of Sienna is a very good doctor of the Church, along with Sts. Thomas Aquinas and Albert the Great. But my Heart belong to Saint Dominic.

I did a tribute to the 16 Carmelites who were martyred during the Reign of Terror, and whose sacrifice helped to bring about the end of Robespierre's and Saint-Just's tyranny.

This is beautiful! St. Teresa is my patron saint, when I made my Confirmation I chose her, partly because she was a writer like myself. I love that you included a scroll and pen in this picture. Thanks also for the biography you included. God bless you.

natamon In reply to JackieStarSister [2012-08-12 22:25:59 +0000 UTC]

God Bless You too Jackie! And what a wonderfully intellectual Saint to choose from too. Some say that the Saints choose us when we select our Patron, but either way, I am glad that the image I was able to create was something enjoyable.
When I create my icons, I want them to remind us of 'real people', but with that hint and spark of God around the edges, ya know?
Thanks again for the kind words, and sharing your thoughts!

Very beautiful. I like how you can show her wisdom and profound faith in this meaningful illustration.

St. Theresa. Now there's an interesting person. Wonder what it would've been like to spend a minute with her?

Thanks so, so much bishop-myriel43!
Well, based on what I have come to understand on her, she had a very charming personality, but was also very intellectual. So, I think she may have been(and most likely still is!) someone you just really want to be around and listen to long stories from. Someone with a lot of charisma.

I love this style It retains the glow often associated with depiction of the saints, but the composition is very contemporary and modern.

This is a lovely representation of St Theresa. The soft, rich colours express her rather excitable nature and her approach towards her faith.

Also, thank you for the history behind the Saint.

Thank you for submitting this to the DA catholic club. C:

Oh my goodness, what a great idea. . .and it looks just like her, too. I love the colors and the softness - it really does look like some medieval painting (except, you know, you have a better grasp on anatomy than they did. )

Actually, Casey, go and check out some Fra Angelico. He's probably one of the best medieval painters out there.

Oh, yeah, I had plenty of art history in college, I know Fra Angelico. And his stuff is lovely, as far as medieval painting goes, but I think he is the exception rather than the rule. But this (and Fra Angelico's works, lol) is totally wonderful.

Thanks iamcasey! I try my best.
And I am honored by your compliments.
The medival works are sometimes great in their basic bodily features, but sometimes, downright funny looking! Cross eyed, or baring a funny facial expression. But when it was more cleanly done, I think the medieval stuff is the bomb.(Thinking of creating a leather cuff with some medieval saints on it).
Thanks again iamcasey!

If I were to say this is absolutely beautiful, would that be vanity? I don't want it to be.

But this is beautiful. You really took that photo of me and made it into something... I dunno. Transcendent. This is gorgeous, Nat. It's absolutely gorgeous. I love the delicate hands and the radiant halo.

And it's so TINY.

I know a little about Theresa via the statue of her, The Ecstacy of St. Theresa-- something we studied in art classes in college (and the halo here COMPLETELY reminds me of). Now, through you, I want to go and learn more about her.

It's really an honor to have you do this. I'll soon have yours up (I started painting again today, whee!), hopefully in a few days.

Yay! I can't wait. Swaps are so much fun.
I am glad that you are already familiar with that amazing statue of her before you saw this. It's good for others to see how any of the saints I have captured thus far, were captured by artists in history first(if one can).
Avila is an interesting person, and one of the many I look forward to spending time with!
The itty-bittiness is something, I assure you, came with lots of practice, as there was most likely no way I could have captured this detail at the start of making aceos. But thank you for the kind words.
When you have my art completed, you know where to find me Miss Thing.

I put a link in my journal to you for this piece... just in case I didn't say that already, which I might have, 'cause my memory has been sand-blasted.

And yep! I was already familiar with her, though I didn't know it was that Theresa. Saints are very, very interesting to me. I could tell you some of my favorites, but that'd give a hint to my half of the trade. Seeing as I wouldn't portray you as St. Rock, I can at least tell you that HE is one. Heh.
