Stormy skies above Baldy Mountain are illuminated from the last rays of light of the setting sun disappearing behind the ten mile range to the west. Boreas pass, named for the Greek God of the north wind, is littered with tree stumps that were used to construct the railroad that connected Breckenridge and Denver during the gold rush days. Some of these stumps are quite beautiful and make for a perfect foreground to a photo. In late july these mountainsides are dotted with indian paintbrush and many other species of wildflower.

Baldy Mountain - White River National Forest - Near Breckenridge, Colorado

This is actually the same stump that I took a photo of two years ago. just looking north, instead of west.

it looks as if it is the indian paintbrush that is illuminating the whole scene and not the sunset. amazing!

or to put it in more proper wording ...

I've put down some ski tracks on that mountain in the background a couple times now. Great capture, per usual. Keep it up, my friend.

I just got back from Crested Butte for some aspen photography and Kebler Pass killed it. I should be heading out of the Springs and into Summit Co. sometime soon for some more. I've been thinking Eccles Pass, timed with the first snow. What are your thoughts on the Southern Gore area?

Oh woooow.. just when I thought it wasn't even possible for a photo to be any more beautiful..
There are just so many layers to this picture, each one is unique.. The flowers, the twisted log, the valley of trees, the gold-speckled mountain, and finally the clouds. Wow, what a beautiful setup β™₯

Yeah, I remember the other one. Amazing photo, Nate. they both look marvelous!!!!
It's hard for me to tell which one is more beautiful. I think I prefer the first one because of the greater dynamic range and because of the sun rays.

The picture is amazing xD the timing was perfect.

I'm trying to learn how to take a photo (and not only push the camera botton).
how far from this flower you were?
I'm trying to do this effect of hyperfocal =/

em613 [2010-07-18 21:58:22 +0000 UTC]

This is beautiful. Do you mind if I ask what kind of camera and glass you would use for a shot like this? (I know there is some post production too). I am trying to learn some photography (seeing as it runs in the family, and I better catch up to uncle and father! They're old school though.... film and such. I need DSLR tips!)

Thanks!
