“Thank you for saving my life, Aura. I presume it was you who freed me. I never want to experience that place again. I was only there for a few moments, but I’ve never felt so lonely,” Viona said. Aura sighed. “I know something about being lonely.”
Viona cut her eyes at Aura. This woman was lonely? Viona attracted more than her share of attention from men, and not a few women, but she was the product of magic. Aura looked home grown. With her face, figure, and hair, she should have a line of men outside her front door she had to shoo away with that staff. Viona felt the kindness oozing from Aura. By itself that would be attractive enough. How could she be lonely? Viona decided not to ask. She didn’t know Aura well enough for something so personal.
“Where were you? How did you just drop out of the air?” Aura asked.
After Viona explained what she experienced and Waxhella’s trap, Aura said, “The best I can guess is Waxhella opened an astral corridor and shoved you into it. You ended in a room between your time and world and mine. When Melitius’ spell struck my staff, it accidentally opened another corridor leading to that room and pulled you here. In other words, you were the victim of two different magical portals of the same nature, activated at the same time in two different worlds.”
“Can I go home?”
“According to magical theory, yes. Once a person steps through one portal and then another, those two portals become one. Instead of two separate corridors, they are now one door that swings both ways. If we open the door on this side, it will open on the other all by itself. So, I should be able to send you home by recasting Melitius’ spell into my staff. To do that, I need his wand.”
“How hard will that be to get?”
“A blind man could follow Melitius. He leaves a trail of angry people he robbed in his wake. Getting the wand from him will be the difficult part. He’s as slippery as a greased eel and twice as mean. In the meantime, you can stay with me. I live in the countryside, and we won’t have to explain you to the townsfolk.” Aura looked Viona over again. If she needed to, she could disguise her. As well as her scarlet enchantress garb, her wardrobe held a normal dress for formal events in town, traveling togs to hide her occupation, a filmy gown for galas with her order that fit Viona’s idea of enchantress’ clothing, and several sets of leather straps some barbarian friends left behind. They would be short, and tight across the chest, but they might work. Maybe. Perhaps. Aura sighed. “I hope.”
