Description

Hi, Well as you may have noticed,I'm not posting any bird pics. This is because I don't have any to take pics of....

Today I was out looking for butterflies and other creepy crawlies with my macro set up. I did find a neat butterfly (posting that pic ) and this Monarch butterfly chrysalis. Sadly this is the only one I have found this year... 2 years ago I found over 40 of them....doesn't bode well for these wonderful butterflies. I only found this one because 2 weeks ago I found a caterpillar, and noted the location. after searching the large field of Milkweed.. for 2 hours and coming up empty, I decided to go back and search that area where I found it. This was not far from that milkweed plant, so I figure it was the same caterpillar.

Now for a disturbing note.....

while out there walking the field, and the road coming and going back to the Jeep, I didn't see a single bird... yup not even the field Sparrows which were present last year....nothing...this was over  3 hours outside time...... I should have seen some birds,as the bushes are full of berries that in previous years always had birds feeding on them.

I have seen and noticed a steady decline in the bird numbers of my area, over the past few years, but this is really scary as they have all vanished.

here's a link to an article that helps explain what's going on....   www.msn.com/en-us/lifestyle/li…

it's an interesting read for sure

The...lack of birds is concerning. To put it mildly.

Another great capture of a great find! I'd like to see something like this one day...maybe I should begin searching near milkweeds.

Sorry to hear about your birds. A few summers back, I saw (multiple) Baltimore Orioles nearly every day flying through my yard. This year, I only saw one, and he did not seem to stay in the area for long.

Yes very disturbing no birds here..  very short on insects too of all kinds.
There is a campaign in my area to plant wild flower seeds for next year so
I hope this will help bring them back.

Beautiful capture George.  I watched a thing on TV that was talking about how the bird population is down over all, I must say for myself Sparrows are about all I've seen at my bird feeders. I planted flowers to draw in Hummingbirds, but no luck with that.
Speaking of flowers, I have question. On the coloumbine do you cut the dead flower stems out, or just leave them? The ones I planted have been doing well, so I'm hopeful for next spring.

Hi Tony, Thanks....

for the flowers, just cut off the tops, it looks like a pod, open this up, and spread the seeds inside....then you can take out the stems...I just usually leave the stems in the garden till the springtime and then remove them.

oohh you found one! Nice shot! Yes....not seeing any birds is disturbing...and a trend which sadly seems to be increasing all around. I really worry about the future of life as we know it on this planet.
