Description Captured this pic of a pair of wood ducks as they floated down the stream.
It was real quiet today in the marsh... not much seen at all, besides these 2, only a lone hawk as it flew overhead.

Hi Ruth, Thank you!
yes these are just one beautiful duck! and they are shy, and very tough to sneak up on.I was lucky to have had them float by my blind so close.Usually if anything seems out of place they will fly off to the other end of the marsh .

there are a couple that have learned about the free hand out at the flamingo display down at the Sacramento Zoo they'll even pose! I'd never seen them outside of an aviary before - but it is an open display and they come snacking

I've had glimpses of a couple pair out in the wild - but never with a camera in hand or in good lighting, of course!

I wonder why there are so few birds, and so little activity. You would think in the fall there would be woodland hustle and bustle getting prepared for the chill of winter. Great picture!

Hi Anne, Thank you! I just got back from walking around the upper field ( 12 acres) and I didn't see a single bird......

I have a funny feeling that the West Nile or bird flue virus has a lot to do with it. For the past 2 years I've seen a decrease in the population of birds and this year the numbers have dropped off a cliff..... after all the migrants left, I was seeing only a few birds. This year I was finding birds dead on the nests in the nesting boxes, so the young of the year just didn't hatch out. Also I saw very few young birds, compared to other years.I just hope this situation changes next year.
What I'm planning on doing to compensate for this , is to concentrate on the animals and waterfowl that I still have left. So you can expect more deer and duck pictures from me.

Hi Tony, Thank you!
Yeah for a common duck they are beautiful. The only other duck that comes close to these are the Harlequin ducks of the northwest. They are really colorful also.

A few years back we had a few Harlequin ducks here. But only because they got blown way off course migrating that fall
