Description Cabal, my sable GSD, is growing up fast. He's around 4.5 months old today and loves to play fetch and follow me around through the forest.

*jealous* My grandparents are looking for a Shep puppy and it is hella hard in my area to find one~

Our shelter here had a pair of GSD puppies, but when we got to the office just an hour after they opened that morning (despite calling ahead to make sure they were still available) they had already been put on hold for someone else and were later adopted that same day. They're a popular breed here.

I would suggest looking into rescue organizations in your state - and outside of it if there are none. Paying $400.00 to transport a dog from three states over is still less than dropping two grand on a purebred pup from a breeder. And you're helping out a dog in need to boot.

See, the thing is we don't really care what all is in it. My grandma is just wanting something with a lil shep in it. We decided to go for a Blue Heeler. Hyper, yes, but a puppy still. So before we give her to my gma for her bday we're going to hardcore train her! Any tips?

Have you been using a clicker for training? That's what we did with Cabal and he's quite obedient, even though he started off VERY stubborn.

Hmm a clicker...well I will be now, lol. We just got her last night and haven't had any issues minus being a little skittish of the neighbor's dogs barking and a few accidents in the house. Petsmart should have clickers right?

Yep. And if she is going to the bathroom in the house, I HIGHLY suggest crate training. We made the mistake of not doing that for Cabal right away. Now that he is crate trained, our lives, and his, have been greatly improved.

The people we got her from were crate training her, and we are attempting to now, we aren't sure what we are doing and the 'help' at our local pet stores aren't helping lol. But you and google have helped us a lot!

He is getting very handsome, I love his little bandana too!

I've always wanted a dog that will follow me around on walks without the need of a leash. My current boy is way too excitable though, and while he's very intelligent and obedient 'most' of the time, I wouldn't trust his recall near roads or if there was ever trouble ( we get a lot of highly venemous snakes where we live, and unfortunately he's found a fascination with them as I keep and breed pythons, so he thinks all snakes are fantastic )

hes so pretty! i love seeing new pictures of him, watching cabal grow up!
where did you get him?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

NaturePunk In reply to faunwolf [2012-12-28 01:10:48 +0000 UTC]

He's from a local breeder who specializes in working-line shepherds for service use. Not all pups from each litter are picked to be service dogs, so they are sold as companion animals instead.

im just curious...where is the breeder located? (i live close to portland)
why did you choose a gsd?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

NaturePunk In reply to faunwolf [2012-12-28 02:33:09 +0000 UTC]

They are located in McMinnville, I believe.
I chose a GSD because I wanted a dog that could keep up with me on a hike and scare off a mountain lion if need-be, but which could also be a good companion for me while I'm here living in the condo with my man and my cat. GSDs can be good apartment dogs if they are exercised at least once a day. They can also live with smaller animals without much conflict. He's a perfect match for me.

thanks for letting me know!

oh yes they are. indeed.
hm, i keep telling people that dogs not only need
space but what is more important is mental stimulation.
and if you exercise your dog much, you can have a bigger
dog in an apartment.

im happy for you that you found your perfect match!
