Cabal has grown like a weed. He is just over a year old now and is growing up to be a very stunning boy. He never ceases to amaze me with his antics, his affection, and his tenderness, even toward the other animals on our little farm. We got a pair of Nigerian goats yesterday and his first meeting with them was quite amusing to behold. He wanted to play with them and kept doing play bows like he thought they were puppies he could romp around the yard with. Helen of Troy, my favorite of the two goats, ended up headbutting Cabal which seemed to give him a healthy new respect for his new yard-mates. Frankly, I think that this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.Related content

Is he a sable colour? When my sister moves out and takes all her many dogs with her I want a working line Sable GSD, but that is a year from now.

Yep, he's sable. His mother was an East German import and his father was born in America but from East German lines. If you're looking to buy from a breeder, make sure their pups are hip/joint certified.

Show line shepherds may as well be a different breed of dog altogether. I hate what selective breeding for looks over health has made them into.

I've found that German Showline is at least healthier than the American Showline. In Germany their showlines still have to be evaluated by Schutzhund in order to breed, so they have to compete with working lines. American show lines on the other hand, can be bred for the steepest back slope possible and health and work ability go out the window. My aunt is who gets the showlines and her German ones outlive the American.
Are working lines any harder to deal with, in a pet setting at least? More work to be put into them?

Oh gods, yes. Cabal has more energy than any other dog I've ever worked with, and only listens to a handful of people (myself, my boyfriend, and my boyfriend's mother). As such, finding a dog-sitter for him when I travel is nearly impossible. On the bright side, he is the perfect dog for me, and listens to my commands with more exuberance than any other dog I've worked with, too. His drive to please is very high but he does need a strong leader or he'll start pushing boundaries, so it's a constant responsibility to ensure that he's worked with every day.

He's definitely a wolfish looking Sable Shepherd!~ But he's got the same adorable derp face as my GSD :} Aren't they the greatest?
