Description Acrylic on wood /

Martha Huber (1910-?) was still underage when she became the model and lover of the German "New Objectivity" artist Karl Hubbuch en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karl_Hub…. She was an aspiring dancer who studied ballet at The Staatstheater. Although Hubbuch did many well known paintings of his wife, Hilda, he also did a series of drawings and watercolors of Martha depicting her in a loose fitting raincoat with hands in pocket www.artvalue.com/auctionresult…. Like many artists of the day, Hubbuch experimented with photography. In his portfolio there exists a  1927 photo of Martha from which this portrait is inspired. The "new woman" was a favorite subject of German artists in the 1920's. Post war trauma obliterated old world social conventions and woman were more free to assert themselves. Martha is one of many neue frau, for whom a fleeting image is all that remains.

I'm really happy that you think so Arthur. I've been working in this direction with the painting for over a year and this is the first historical portrait that I am totally satisfied with. I was forced to take a two week break from doing art. Maybe that helped?
