Description This picture was more or less a visualization of what the Fire Lord and Lady's clothes look like. I really wish I had the patience to put a background in here, but alas - I do not.

There are a few reasons for this picture.

First of all. I like Zuko and Katara together. It gives me nice fuzzy feelings inside

Second of all, I am really tired of seeing pictures of 'Fire Lord and Lady' ONLY dressed in the colors black, maroon and gold. So here is my long shibang about the fashion of the Fire Nation.

What I know is that there are many colors that make up fire, be it a camp fire, a candle, the suns rays, a comet hurtling towards earth... there are many colors in fire. I think it actually goes blue, white, yellow, orange then red from hottest to coolest.

What I am trying to express is the idea that for a hundred years, the fire nation rained down destructive fire and thus, for a hundred years, it was a fashion staple to only have red, black and gold. But with Zuko as the new Fire Lord, I am sure that he and Katara would want to push the war as far out of the way as possible, leaving it to the history books. He wants the nations to prosper, which led me to thinking about 'a new day rising' The sun rising. The suns colors as it rises.

The robes that this new king wears are those of energy and hope. A new flame; a young spark emerging from the ashes of the corrupted fires that spread through out the kingdoms. This is the beginning of something new, and I whole heartedly think that Zuko and Katara would be the first to embrace such a change.

And its kinda neat, because when you squint your eyes, and look at them, they do kinda look like flames Pretty cool.

So do we all get the symbolism? I only ask because I really want to get my point across.
Red+black+gold=destructive, corrupted fire of the war
Blue+yellow+orange=sunrise, reborn energy, life

And the third thing is I cannot believe that the fire nation only has gold thread and black and red dye.... in its entire kingdom. No way. Ty-Lee got some pink, so where the heck did the rest of the pink cloth go?!

Here are my references for the robes:

I wish we had seen this in the Legend of Korra, well we wouldn't see Zutara, but these Fire Nation colors would have been nice to show.

They wouldn't wear white. The reason fire nation don't wear white is because white is the color of mourning. Zuko and Azula are seen in white outfits when their grandfather dies. But your picture is still pretty cool. And I love the costumes, you know, just, not the white parts.

NautilusL2 In reply to TTdontcry [2012-11-25 15:25:42 +0000 UTC]

Is not death part of rebirth? My reasoning is a Fire Nation person can wear any color other than black, red and gold. White included, because yes, they sure as hell are mourning the loss of the world they knew. But, they (represented in these clothes) are hopeful for a new rein. Makes sense to me, I thought I conveyed it well. Guess I didn't :\

No that's fine, you're totally within your right not like Zutara and hate Zuko if you wanted! That's your deal. I was confused by the comment as it had nothing to do with my picture, which is a costume design.

I like your logic. And I love that Zuko is wearing a hint of blue, because even though it can be found in fire, it also is a nod to Katara's element and heritage. Its nice that you combined the styles shown in the Fire Nation with Earth Kingdom, and a little hint of Japanese flavor (I may or may not be a costume design major...it doesn't show, does it? Lol). It really freshens up the look. P.S.- Zuko is smiling. Holy crap.

Thank you for the comment! I wanted to make the formal garb be something more that just the fire nation! One because I don't believe that they would only wear red, thats like assuming everyone one who lives in Texas wears cowboy hats, guess what, they dont. I wanted to show that this New Era of peace and happiness is multinational.

you're welcome. And I agree. After all, Zuko goes on to become a symbol of peace for the world, and the red/black/gold combo has been seen as a symbol of terror for a century. It would be like the Nazis disbanding, apologising for their crimes, and continuing to wear swastikas. I think you have the right idea.

I always read Artist's Comments. :3 I don't like it when people don't read mine and then ask something that I already said.

Whatever the pairing, if you have an original or well-executed concept, I like the art. (Have you read "Promises to Keep" on fanfiction.net? It is a Zutara story, that I, as a hardcore Kataang and Toko shipper, have in my favorites. )

Hmm, no I can't say I have read that story. I'll look it up! I'm not a fan of Katara and Aang, but this is a personal preference: I could never date a guy who was younger or shorter than me. So that clouds my vision of them together.

But I love the idea of Aang and Toph or Toph and Sokka together. They were sweet.

I like to read artist comments as well and I too get annoyed when someone says something or asks something that I have written down without reading it. It makes me frustrated!!

MetellaStella In reply to NautilusL2 [2011-04-03 22:45:14 +0000 UTC]

Heh, I am six feet tall, so I actually sometimes daydream about dating a shorter guy who is secure enough in himself to date me.

As far as the age difference, with both Toph/Zuko and Aang/Katara, in many cultures, especially pre-industrial ones, adulthood begins at the onset of puberty. The ages might not be that big of a deal in their world. We know next to nothing about marriage and dating conventions in the Avatarverse. Personally I would still like Zuko and Toph to wait until she is older, though. *shrug*

I never see Toph and Sokka working out. She would be absolutely miserable living in the South Pole with no earth or constantly being on boats with him. And I don't think he's secure enough with his non-bender status to be completely comfortable being with someone who is so far above his abilities. I ship Ty Lokka. :3 Ty Lee is one of my very favorite characters, next to Toph and Zuko. So much of her story is untold- I feel like we got a pretty good picture of Azula and Mai, but Ty Lee is fascinating- she has hidden depth beneath her bubbly facade imo. I'm writing a slightly AU fanfic pretty much dedicated to her and Toph.

NautilusL2 In reply to MetellaStella [2011-04-04 02:56:14 +0000 UTC]

I love Ty Lee too! I think she was the best out of the evil girl group She and Sokka would have been cute together as I think you would be right, Sokka is not always the most comfortable with his short comings (when it comes to bending and such.)

And yes, we have no idea what the Avatarian world thinks is marriageable age or anything, but I assume is would be similar to our history. As soon as the girl is of baby-making age, she is betrothed to some man who is 20+ years her senior. She would be his second or so wife as the other one(s) have already died of child birth complications. She will live as long as she pumps out babies and tries not to die from it.

So I have no problem in the world with an incredibly older man and a young wife. I have a problem with the opposite. I just freak out when I hear about cougars, or a friend dating a guy who is younger. Even a year younger! We all know that males are slower to mature than women, and the idea that a fully realized girl would deal with an already younger bodied male with an even younger mind is preposterous.

My friend who's 23 has an on again/off again boyfriend who's 21. Even that small age gap is large in terms of personal responsibility, respect and general maturity.

And wow, 6 feet tall! You must look like a model!

MetellaStella In reply to NautilusL2 [2011-04-06 18:03:32 +0000 UTC]

" . . . but I assume is would be similar to our history . . ."

Yeah, people usually tried to have as many kids as possible. The weird thing is, the only character in the Avatarian world I can think of that has more than one sibling is Ty Lee (and, as I say in my fanfic, her father was probably appalled at having so many children and no sons).

So you're okay with Toko, just not Kataang. Alrighty them.

I guess Aang has the whole "wisdom of a thousand lifetimes" thing going for him. XDDDDD JK.

"cougars,"

Cougars? Huh? What?

"You must look like a model!"

(even though I am sorely lacking in the chest area- something I think conventional American agents would object to) That's what everyone tells me. Either that, or "You must play basketball!"

*headdesk*

NautilusL2 In reply to MetellaStella [2011-04-06 20:09:01 +0000 UTC]

I think Ty Lee is a good sub character that you can play around with. We don't know much about her and that allows us to imagine she has a different life than all the other ones.

Exactly, I have nothing wrong with older man/younger woman. It's just the other way around.

You brought up something that I had forgotten about Aang though, that though he may be young and immature he does have the collective wisdom of all his ancestors. Unfortunately, wisdom does not equal responsibilities like: taking out the trash, helping with dishes, putting the toilet seat down, not spending all you money on toys instead of rent etc.

A cougar is an older woman who is dating or persuing a younger man. So like Demi Moore and my mom lol XD

And I'm sorry if I offended you by saying you are a model.

Yus. For example, how did Azula and Mai react when she went to the circus? (forget how her upper-class family would take such a low-brow career choice! Youch.)

"Unfortunately, wisdom does not equal responsibilities like: taking out the trash, helping with dishes, putting the toilet seat down, not spending all you money on toys instead of rent etc."

lol. I wonder, though, surely the boy monks had responsibilities and chores like this? And funny thought, are there toilets with seats in the Avatarverse? Maybe not. And considering monks don't put value on worldly possessions, I don't think he'd have a shopping bug. Though, the Gaang does seem to have money issues first season- bison whistle case in point

"And I'm sorry if I offended you by saying you are a model. "

That's okay. I'm sorry for snapping at you. There are definitely much, much worse stereotypes people have to put up with. I really shouldn't be complaining just because I find it annoying.

NautilusL2 In reply to MetellaStella [2011-04-08 16:45:25 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I too wonder about how her friends felt when they found she had run away to the circus! I'm going to think they (or at least Mai) may live vicariously through her adventures

For the Aang thing. We know that the Air Nomads are based off of Buddhism and Taoism yes? So some info: my boyfriend and his family are practicing Buddhists. His dad is an Acharya, and is the big kahoona of all Shamballah Buddhism in Canada and the southern states in America. His family is also best friends with Sakyong Jamgon Mipham Rinpoche who is a high lama and the leader of all Shamballah Buddhists in the world.

Those examples were ones from my boyfriend shows lol.
He grew up doing chores same as any other kid, but because hes a MAN-CHILD he doesn't help me out as much as he should. He also says that it is human nature to desire things (which is fine), but they realize that all worldy possessions are temporary.

So in the end, I still think that living *this life* will produce maturity. Aang has a long way to go till he becomes a mature husband and lover to Katara, and because he is younger than her, he will always be behind.

I realize that this conversation has gone wayyy wayyy weird and I'm sorry bout that. I love talking about Avatar and I hope you don't think I am hating on Aang or Kataang, we all have our reasons for liking or disliking. I think I got sidetracked by my real life issues. My boyfriend isnt as horrible as I probably made him seem. When he's not being a man-child, he is perfectly sweet, wonderful and helpful. He can tackle big problems with a level head and tact.

That's exactly the angle I take in my story about Ty Lee. XDD It's an alternate timeline where she joins the Gaang . . .

Oh, really? That's awesome. What does he think of the airbenders' portrayal? (Did he watch the show?)

No, this isn't weird at all. *shrug* Everyone has opinions and I'm just glad that the CAPScrazy shipping war hasn't really persisted after the show ended. Pointless and vapid arguments are a drag but honest discussion is invigorating. It's just another example of how personal experience shapes how you see things. It's interesting.

NautilusL2 In reply to MetellaStella [2011-04-11 21:45:18 +0000 UTC]

Your story sounds cool! I like the idea of her joining the Gaang as I think she would have fit in perfectly if it was in the show!

Yeah, my boyfriend watched the first season of it with me and he enjoyed it. He liked the Asian influence of the whole world, and how each nation was an element. He's all about zen, feng shui, and the elements that go into Buddhism. I asked him what bender he wanted to be though and he said waterbender because he loves snow and cold. He's from Canada, but he thought that yes, Air Benders were the closest to his beliefs.

God, that CAP shipping was nuts. I only saw a little of it and then steered clear XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MetellaStella In reply to NautilusL2 [2011-04-11 23:11:50 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. That's what I thought too. She and Katara would be bffs and she and Aang . . . well, that's too much peppiness to contain!! FFN is down right now, though, so I can't post the next chapter. *facepalm*

Fun! I've always picture myself as a waterbender, too, but more of a traditional interpretation- go with the flow, you know? I never saw Katara as a genuinely "waterlike" person because of her temper, and Korra sounds even further off the mark. As far as ice and cold, I am very cold-natured, but maybe it would be worth it to freeze my tail off if I lived in the Venice-inspired North Pole! Maybe I'd live in the Earth Kingdom instead, hmmm . . . What about you?

One thing that always confused me about the Air Nomads though, if they were true "nomads" why did they seem to have permanent dwellings at the Temples in the flashbacks? And how were they supposed to "detach themselves" from the world if they spent their time foraging friendships all over the world?

I didn't officially get into online shipping until well after the last episode aired, so I missed the brunt of it. But you can still stalk threads on certain forums and laugh at what went on. It's highly entertaining to see elaborate justifications that people come up with. (as I have definitely done for Toko, I will admit)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

NautilusL2 In reply to MetellaStella [2011-04-12 03:50:24 +0000 UTC]

I don't know if most can just say "Im a water bender!" or "earth kingdom here!" but I know I can't. I THINK I am a fire bender/fire nation person because of my personality. But I am a mermaid as well, I was born for water and have swam in competitions for most of my life. I liiiive for water and its malleable life. And on the other hand I could be an air nomad because I also truly live a nomads life, I can pick up my whole life and move it if necessary. There is something that sings to be about being free above the clouds, flighty, airy, and not tied down to drama.

So Im not exactly sure what I am, but I I'm thinking Fire Nation.

Speaking of Air Nomads, you do bring up a good point of "if they were nomads, then why did they have settlements?" The Bedou of Africa and Arabia can make temp. settlements till the rains dry out and the animals leave, they follow them throughout the year. But I don't think the Air Nomads would need to move for that reason. So I'm guessing they are called that because "Air Nomads" sounds really cool on paper and there may have been no follow through to explaining it.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MetellaStella In reply to NautilusL2 [2011-04-12 06:03:14 +0000 UTC]

Heh, that's understandable. Fire is probably the most fascinating to me (the idea of it being "spirit" is vastly untapped and unexplored, I think- which I address in my fanfic) but it is the element I least identify with- I am just not a passionate person.

Maybe a reason I like Kataang is because I identify with water and air the most- I am detached and aloof in most ways. XD

As far as plain usefulness, if I were to actually be thrust into the Avatar world, earth would be the way to go. I see it as being the most powerful, regardless of how it's portrayed in the show. How could an airbender or firebender stand up to an earthbender, realistically speaking?

A lot is unexplained about the "Air Nomads" or "monks." I guess that is part of the draw- the mystique. I tend to imagine that the "detachment" Guru Pathik talks about should more pertain to possessions than people in general- for of course, Yangchen says that the Avatar's duty is to people. He can't just turn his back on the world- and neither should anyone, right? In a callous way, I mean.
