Description Omhi of the Dhuriiehm.

Sorry it’s another portrait. I’m trying to knock out a bunch of WIPs I’ve had lying around for ages. Used Painter a lot more than I have been for this one, too. I’m getting more comfortable with achieving details and such in the program. (Of course, I spent hours painting the chains and they're barely visible at this resolution... bugger.)

Holy heck, I love this. (Well, "love" might not be accurate, when I have a creepy chill up my spine looking at it!) That is a person you can imagine lounging about while his demon hordes tear a civilization to shreds, not particularly caring one way or the other.

He's actually a very kind man, and a pacifist.

Your chains are beautiful. They're so perfect looking, I can almost feel them. Same with his skin, I can imagine exactly how it would feel.

Gorgeous piece darling.
If I may ask what method are you using for blending and how do you add such texture to skin?

Best regards.

Textures are all hand painted. For more info please see my skin tutorial. I briefly cover how to paint veins in Section 2 [link] and will talk more about blending in the upcoming Section 4.

I know that and I've read your tutorials. I'm interested in your blending method.

navate In reply to StylishDexterity [2010-02-09 04:12:09 +0000 UTC]

It is nothing special--the skin textures mostly come from using a spackled brushes (quick demo of how lovely they blend: [link] ) This is how I blend 90% of my skin. I like them because it creates a fairly smooth blend without sacrificing texture. The rest is some semi-soft round brushes (PS) and then the Artist Oils and Palette Knives in Corel Painter. I blend with a light hand/low opacity to build the color up layer by layer, the same as if I were working with traditional paint.

I will go over all this more in-depth and with examples in the final part of the tutorial. I am sorry it is taking me so long but I was ill all last month and had paying work to catch up on. Hopefully I will publish the next part this month. Please be patient.

It looks stunning. The chains definitely look worked, I wish I could see them closer. I also find the flow of the hair to be really beautiful as well. I also like the vein-y texture in the skin, it makes his skin look like its somewhat translucent. I HARTS EET.

I would love to learn how to paint skin - your textures, used colors - the result all together is always amazingly realistic. You can almost feel blood pulsing under it.

I guess that Painter and Photoshop are the best for this kind of stuff + good brushes, some filters... shame that I don't have them hehe

I'm completely inept when it comes to colors and skin tones - probably result of using pencils for such a long time.

Great work.

navate In reply to Nauzykaja [2008-06-23 22:27:25 +0000 UTC]

No filters, just lots of low-opacity layers to build up color. And color is a learned thing. A few years ago I was absolutely pants at color and it's still something I struggle with. It doesn't come easily to me.

Corel Painter 8, actually. I'm behind the times. I also use Adobe Photoshop 7.0; the programs work best together imo.

Hey I saw this in the 25th issue of ImagineFX. Compared to this, the image I saw in the magazine looks like it was a speed painting. I do like the eyes in the previous version in the magazine to his eyes now personally, I really loved them, but none the less, this looks amazing. I too still need to get to grips with that program. Not only did you create such eye catching lips, but I love the metal chains hanging off his jacket.

Oh, how I adore men with long, dark hair. Hehe.
Ooh, yeah those chains are really cool. At first glance with this resolution they actually look kind of like cobwebs, which is a pretty killer effect.

This is lovely Lauren! You just keep getting better and better with each portrait. I especially like the details and skin tones.

The only thing I'd like to critiqe is the ear, I feel that is needs to be slightly larger and slightly higher up? Just my thoughts really.

Thanks!

Hi Maddy! Thanks for the crit; I think you're right. His ear was originally too large (to the point it looked a bit goofy) so I shrank it down...must have gone a bit too far with it.

navate In reply to quickreaver [2008-05-21 22:32:03 +0000 UTC]

Hahah, thank you. What kind of brushes and setting are you using in Painter? I stick to the oils mostly--the fine bristle, thick bristle, and smeary bristle. For details, pull the 'feature' down to about 1.5 and keep the opacity fairly low to keep the colors from overlaying all wonky on each other.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

quickreaver In reply to navate [2008-05-22 19:51:56 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I favor the oils too...but when I DO use Painter, it's mostly to really shove paint around with palette knives. I found a couple of great ones on John Derry's site. [link] Thanks for that tip on 'feature'; I'll play with that and see if it makes the controllability better!

This is so beautiful for so many reasons. You see people portraying vampire types a lot, but they never really look dead or deadly. Most people make the vampires more about sex because that's easier to think of than death. Now I'm not sure if he is a vampire, but you've really nailed the death part so gorgeously.
Secondly, I long to see art with characters with some proper facial structure, for example: men have big noses. They just do. And this one has it too, which immediately brings so much more vididness to the picture (still talking death here, of course).
And oh, the hair... don't you just want to comb your fingers through it?

Extremely beautiful!

navate In reply to youkobutt [2008-05-21 22:19:30 +0000 UTC]

No, he's not a vampire, but I knew some might mistake him for one because he's a bit corpse-like. Thanks very much!

youkobutt In reply to navate [2008-05-22 07:29:23 +0000 UTC]

So how did he become that way?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

navate In reply to youkobutt [2008-05-22 07:51:20 +0000 UTC]

He was made that way. The backstory is a bit complex, but in short the Dhuriiehm are an engineered race and his genetic makeup simply isn't compatible with itself, so he is rotting from the inside out.
