This was inspired by and partially referenced from a photoshoot of the vocalist of Rentrer en Soi, one of my favorite bands, found in a fashion magazine. (link) I've had the photo on my desktop for ages, and I kept thinking how I'd love to paint it. So I did. ;] It's not really a fanart as it's not meant to be the vocalist, but it's definitely a tribute to a band and genre I love. I play Rentrer en Soi a lot when I paint.I wanted to transform the character in the photo into my own image. I can’t stand when people fill their galleries with images copied straight off photos with nothing of themselves added in. Hopefully I did not fall victim to that. Did a lot of experimentation with color, light, and depth on this one.

So, uhm, this is arguably my favorite piece on all of dA o__O;
I love that photoshoot (the Leviathan one was kind of creepy, IMO), but the way you expanded on it, gave it the style you have, it's great. I absolutely adore this, and INSTAFAVED it after I was done collecting my jaw off the floor.

Is this vocalist a man or a woman? Everything about the painting and the photograph suggests X-chromosomes, but there are no boobies, I do not understand

Hahah, he's a man. Although that photo has more extreme makeup than his usual look, the visual kei scene gravitates towards androgyny.

do you paint the background first or do you put that in after the subject?

I paint them both at the same time--when I sketch I make sure I get all my colors laid out pretty well before I start any detailing. Check out my Scraps Gallery for a few progress shots of this image and a few others, yo get a better idea of my process.
But it's always a good idea to paint in your background first, because color is reflective. The color of your subject is very dependent on the background color, so putting the background in first helps keep the image cohesive.

You did well with the colours, and the hands seem almost real... These ribbon-somethings look like they are floating in water... I like it.
And I agree strongly with your comment about the galleries full of paintovers - I can't stand it too. But fortunately this piece is not a paintover - I see your soul in it.
