Description
EDIT: Second time round and we came home with a SECOND PLACE prize! Yay for Pica in her first/second chance show.
Well... We got 10th.
And considering this I feel is my best piece yet, I'm disappointed, to say the least. I know *Starblas was DEFINITELY cheated out of a first place, too, so it's not just me that's feeling the heat of this round of judging. Not to say the winners weren't great too, but the fact that these were by far EACH of our best pieces makes the placements seem more than just a little suspicious. Hence the Second Chances Horse Show . What a wonderful idea, too, because I'm sure this happens a lot. Enter up, everyone, if you are in the same situation or if your entry wasn't even judged!
Horse: Pica de Galla (age 10)
Rider: Savannah Hill (age 17)
Music: "Full Circle" - Half Moon Run
Class: Dressage
First Show: Autumn Event
SECOND SHOW: Second Chances Horse Show
I'm so proud of this! I hope y'all like it too!
STORY:
It's like the CandleWick teens travel in packs! You can't just see one, there's always at least two others within the vicinity. Shows are no different! Savvy wasn't used to this. While she was comfortable with all her friends around the stables and on trail rides, shows were a little different... She was nervous and, though she was a nice girl, she got a little intense when it came to any kind of competition.
Luke snatched one of Savvy's gloves off the tailgate of Justin's truck, which they had yet again piled into on their way to the show. They had the entire morning to waste time because the ride wasn't until late afternoon. This didn't keep her from slapping Luke on the arm until he gave back her glove. Nerves rose up in her stomach with each passing minute and she slunk back into the bed of the truck.
"Sav, you have to chill", Robin said, resting a hand on her friend's twitching leg, "Pica won't be able to concentrate if she's worried about taking care of you."
"I know, but I've never competed at a recognized show before... they've only ever been schooling shows", Savannah said.
"Don't you think I know that, girl?! I was there your very first time riding in front of judges. We were like, what, 9 years old?" Robin smiled.
Savvy laughed, "Something like that..."
"Exactly! This is no different, just a bit fancier clothes!" Robin was indeed making her feel better, "Now Luke and I were going to go check out the studs here. I saw this incredible grey stallion when we were driving in, I haven't stopped thinking about him!"
"Thinking about the horse or thinking about Luuuuuke?" Savannah said with a sly grin. She had noticed them getting a little more flirty the past couple of months. It started with Luke showing off how strong he was by lifting the giant round bale feeder all by himself out in one of the right front pasture, conveniently when Robin was exercising a boarder's horse in the outdoor arena.
"Shut up", Robin laughed and tossed a rag at her, "I gotta go, I'll be back in a few!"
She jumped from the tailgate and trotted off to where Luke was talking to Justin, waiting for her. After they left, Justin walked over and jumped up into the bed and sat down next to her.
"You look like a giant when you stand up in the truck like that", Savannah said to the basketball player.
"Just imagine if I rode a horse how tall I'd be sitting up there", he laughed. When she didn't say anything he kept talking, "Don't worry about the show, okay? You've got about 3 minutes where they're watching. Just three. And I've seen you training at home. You're both spectacular and she listens really well to you. She may slip up sometimes, but she's always in tune to your signals. You have to be the rock for the both of you, though, she gets pretty high strung sometimes."
"I know she does... and maybe that's what I'm worried about. What if she takes off with me across the field, destroying all those crops in her path?! I'd be humiliated..."
"She wants to do what she's told, and that trumps any flight instinct she has."
"You're right... Thank you, Justin", Savannah looked up and smiled at him.
"No problem, Sav. What do you say we get that horse of yours ready?" He smiled and offered a hand to help stand her up. Savvy took it and they hopped to the ground ready to tack up. When the sun started to set, it was time for the rides to begin. Savannah and Justin walked the Pica to the arena.
"You've got this", Justin grinned, his pearly whites shining against tanned skin. He patted her on the shoulder and gave her the reins. With that, he started off to where Robin and Luke were sitting in the grass along the meadow and folded up next to them on the ground.
Savannah mounted up and the bell sounded. A lofty trot covered ground as the girls entered the arena and as they approached X, a quiet down transition from Pica set the scene for the rest of the test. Savvy began to relax and with the sound of "Full Circle" playing as background music, maybe this wouldn't be as bad as she thought.
As she looked up from the salute, a face of determination dominated her persona and the real ride began!
