Here's my hat for reference: [link]

PROTIP: If you need help keeping it on your head, try one of two things: bobby pins on the sides if you don't mind them showing, OR if you do, try cutting small slits parallel to the brim of the hat inside it to slide the pins into. This should keep it secure all around :3

Feel free to come to me with questions.

WANT AN OCARINA?
You can buy a nice ocarina from songbirdocarina.com for $30
that is either the fairy ocarina or the ocarina of time. They sound beautiful and work great for cosplay!

HAPPY SEWING!!!

First girl in the hat is me, second girl is ~ go give her some love

Assuming I forgot to add the tail end before sewing it all together, is there another way I could add it without it looking messy? Thanks c:

Really good tutorial! I feel like a few things could've been better explained, but I did end up with a pretty nice hat in the end. Kudos!

Wow, this is awesome! I want to cosplay as Skyward Sword Link next year (so I'm getting started on it now, as I'm not a very good seamstress ), so thank you very much for this! The TP hat and the SS hat are really similar, so I think I can improvise with the differences here.

Now, I hope you don't mind me asking, but what kind of fabric would you suggest for the SS hat? Also, rather than having to pin it in place, how well do you think sewing elastic inside the brim will work? And by "elastic", I mean that stretchy band you find in the top of your yoga pants to keep them up -- I don't know what it's actually called, elastic is just what I call it.

How do you know how big to make the triangle and how big to make it to the size of your head?

My felt Link hat came out perfect! I followed a youtube video [link] , along with this pattern. I cut mine like he shows in the picture: 30-36 inches long on the longest side and 12 inches wide for head width (24 in.{-1in after sewn} circumference), I cut 2 identical isosceles triangles 12"x 3ft. Did a 1/2" seam for all the sewing.
I also made Link ears! Hand drew them 2" to 2 1/2" at the widest point, and 5 1/2" long up to the point. I made the ear on paper, cut out the shape pinned the paper to 2 "skin" colored felt material- right sides together, sewed around the paper. Leaving the widest opening unsewn, turned it right side out, folded in and sewed the edge shut. Added a few details to the ear with zigzag stitch and attached the ears to the hat with a few stitches with invisible thread!

Another tutorial showed the hat to be cut 12 inches wide. So that's what I'm going to do. 3ft x 12in.
And the head band 6in wide by 24in. long

Petrie27 In reply to nayruasukei [2011-11-14 23:29:03 +0000 UTC]

His hat always goes down to his elbows, which is roughly half a person's height, so the tutorial works for an average male. ^^
