Description Assalaamu alaikum [Peace be to you],

I wasn't planning to submit anything for valentine's day. as a Muslim who does not celebrate it, I was going to just ignore it. until I got this sweet note from a Christian sister wishing me a happy valentine's day. then I really got to reply. But before that, I need to explain certain things.

REMARK: this article is not aimed to insult people's customs or practices. it is aimed to present the Islamic perspective on these customs for the purpose of better understanding of Islam.

Valentine's Day cards are exchanged between friends and lovers. In school students draw names to exchange gifts or just pass Valentines to classmates. Men usually present gifts of candy and flowers to their Sweethearts. Many couples today make a treat of Dark Chocolate and a fine Merlot Wine in the privacy of their Valentine's Day evening!
In recent years, a new phenomenon has spread among the Muslim youth – males and females alike – which does not bode well. This is manifested in their imitation of the Christians in their celebration of the Valentine’s Day. so what is this Valentine's day?

HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED WHERE THE VALENTINE'S DAY TRADITION STARTED?

Some authorities trace the origin of this Tradition to the Pagan Roman feast called Lupercalis celebrated on February 15th to ensure protection from wolves. The pagan celebration involved young men striking people with whips. Young women endured the blows because they believed this would enhance their fertility.
According to the wrong Roman pagan beliefs, Cupid was the so-called god of love and according to myth was the son of Mercury, winged messenger of their so-called gods, and Venus, their so-called goddess of love. He was also the counterpart of the Greek so-called god Eros. He is usually portrayed as a winged infant with a quiver of arrows and a bow. His wounds are said to inspire love or passion in those who are struck.

THE CONNECTION BETWEEN SAINT VALENTINE AND THIS FESTIVAL:

It was said that when many Romans became Christian, after Christianity had become widespread, the Roman emperor Claudius II decreed in the third century CE that soldiers should not get married, because marriage would distract them from the wars they used to fight. Valentine, a Christian priest challenged this command and used to conduct secret marriage sermons. He was soon discovered and was sentenced to death. In prison, he (Valentine) fell in love with the jailer’s daughter, but this was a secret because according to Christian laws, priests and monks were forbidden to marry or fall in love. but the people overlooked his crime of falling in love since he remained steadfast on Christianity when the emperor offered to pardon him if he forsook Christianity and worshipped the Roman gods; then he would be one of his closest confidantes and he would make him his son-in-law. But Valentine refused this offer and preferred Christianity, so he was executed on 14 February 270 CE, on the eve of February 15, the festival of Lupercalis. Ever since then, it was called ‘Priest Valentine’s holiday’. After the spread of Christianity throughout Europe, February the 14th was re-named ‘Valentine’s Day’ in his memory because (they say) he sacrificed himself for Christianity and fostered those in love.
In A.D. 496 Saint Pope Gelasius I outlawed the pagan festival Lupercalis and named February 14th as St. Valentine's Day.

ISLAMIC STANCE TOWARDS THIS FESTIVAL:

Every Muslim must know that this holiday was invented by the disbelievers (those who reject Islam) and it is therefore unlawful to celebrate it according to the religion of Islam. There is no difference of opinion among the Muslim scholars regarding this. In fact, even if this holiday was invented by the Muslims it would still be unlawful to celebrate it.
The religion of Islam is complete, so there is absolutely no need for invented opinions, innovated desires or man-made legislation. The blessings and favours that have been given to us by Islam are all-inclusive and so we do not have any need for seasons and occasions to be invented so that we may celebrate them.
Islam is a perfect religion. It combines the good of this life and the Hereafter; it addressed the soul and was not heedless of the body; it gave preference to the Hereafter but did not neglect our needs in this life. Islam is a moderate religion that is neither negligent of any matter, nor does it exaggerate any issue beyond its rightful status. There is no monasticism in Islam, nor blind-materialism.

Is it rational for a Muslim to go astray and become blind-imitators after being guided?

In Islam, the festivals are clearly defined and well established (Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid-ul-Ad'ha), and no additions or subtractions may be accepted. In Islam, festivals have been prescribed for us by the God almighty -Glory be to him- and taught by his final messenger -peace be upon him-. Celebrating Valentine's Days is prohibited in Islam for the following reasons:
1. It is an innovated festival that has no grounds in Islam.
2. It invites to lust and encourages immorality and forbidden love.
3. It busies the heart with useless matters and attaches it to harmful matters, that only go against the teachings of our religion.
Therefore, it is not permissible to practice anything associated with this festival, whether it is related to food, drink, clothing, gift exchange or anything else.
Finally, a Muslim should be proud of his religion and should not be naïve to follow everything he sees around him.
I ask the God almighty to protect the Muslim brothers and sisters from all evil temptations, visible and invisible, and to take care of us and give us strength.

To be continued in part 2:

I hope this was beneficial.

Allah must be a wierd sod. Why not celebrate christmas? or valentine's day, which is nothing to do with Islam, but nonetheless, why not respect others?

I don't really see the point of Valentines Day.

In my opinion, this so called holiday is nothing but a complete cash cow for the capitalists.

But Easter and Christmas are supposed to celebrate something. Easter celebrates the rebirth of Jesus while Christmas is Jesus's birthday.

If I recall St. Valentine's day was named after a Christian saint. Most people as per usual when it comes to supposedly religious holidays like Christianity/Easter usually ignore that. Maybe less so for Easter/Christmas as those are uber-important for Christians. Something like St. Valentines day holds little significance.

Okay this is very delayed but, my mother is the most religious person I have ever met. She knows everything about Islam and has read the Qu'ran countless times in the past 50 years. She has never stopped me from celebrating Valentine's Day, or any other "sinful" holiday. So, who are you to tell me it is against the very religion my own mother knows so much about?

Also, by your highly flawed logic Halloween, Thanksgiving, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, etc are also sinful and against Islam? Because being tolerant of other races and learning to not hate everyone that is different from your given self is against Islam. Totally. I highly doubt you are ever going to say that Islam says to hate others just because they have a different skin color. That would insult a large part of the Muslin community and it would give the media and haters of Islam more reason to call Muslims terrorists.

And basically, if I even so happen to eat turkey on Thanksgiving, I'm sinning? Even if it's left over turkey and there is nothing else i the house to eat and say that in this scenario I also don't have the money to go out and buy more food? Would you rather I starve than for me to supposedly sin because I ate something which is normally associated  a non-Islamic holiday? I highly doubt Allah would want me to starve. But apparently you and your flawed logic would.

Nayzak's a great artist and some of his artworks have great messages, but he has a very hardcore stance on this issue.  And it is just his oppinion.  It is not what Islam says, and he's not an Islamic scholar to dictate how Muslims should believe.

There is nothing wrong with getting your significant other a gift on valentines day.  It is just a day with a name attatched to it.  Instead of focusing one day to love your significant other, you can choose every day to do that.  There is nothing wrong with creating more days to directly or indirectly appreciate Allah's blessings.  Allah has given us creativity to make things, including more ways to appreciate the one and only.

By acting like a "hardcore" Muslims in front of people who are not Muslims, you will be pushing them away from Islam, not bringing them closer to Islam.  Just look at people's reactions on the comments of this artwork.

I say YES,
but in different way:
to show the love for God through my friends and family, with them, in the name of Christ. I don't symbolize with Cupid and Hearts,
maybe yes I'll do,  but like a ribbon way

the first thing is show through all the year all days:  our love and friendship for God.
No names, no Valentine, no symbols or arrows...
a prayer for peace, love and friendship daily is better than Valentines Day !

Oh everything over there is.  But that is the language of their book.  It's not hateful, but it is contemptuous.  Thing is, I don't trust anything written by the hand of man that is anecdotal.  Christianity for instance, the Bible is "divinely inspired".  Oh boy.  But how many of them actually seek out god through fasting and spiritual journeys of their own?  And not by volition of a ceremony or holiday, but because they were called.

I meet a lot of people who say, the book is, therefor it must be, instead of "I was called and it was revealed unto me".

Not really an opinion, just an idea and observation, because I will often change my mind based on persuasive arguments and evidence.

But ultimately if they all get their wish we'll all be destroyed, because this world, this island in the middle of the real hel (yes with one L), that frozen, airless nightmare from beyond the sphere, is in the middle of a far more horrifying thing than they want to comprehend.

The ball above us is a nuclear nightmare, an inferno and forge of power beyond imagining by the hand of man, but there it is.  Poised to destroy us all with the merest hiccup.

This finite hole could be paradise and heaven, but the concept of an afterlife robs us of that and real endeavor and makes us weak.  In the end it could be our very undoing, Gods or no Gods.

The world is a wound clock, each tick making waves outward that affect everything, like a rube goldberg machine.  One action making a new one.  Why do people suffer?  Because of things happening before hand stretching far back into time immemorial.  Ramble ramble ramble rant rant rant.

Also I'm probably quite mad, so there's that.

This is really rude. You're being very disrespectful to actual Pagan people, who, by the way, still exist and celebrate these ancient holidays. You're also denouncing their gods. Educate yourself before you feel like everyone is attacking your religion. Also, Valentine's day is a Secular holiday now, meaning there is no religious meaning or any past connotation.

you know... nobody cares if you celebrate valentine's day or not ... --" no really...
Then, valentine's day is just to tell the ones you love that you love them, nothing more .... For example your wife, i don't think, it's incompatible with Islam to tell your wife that you love her ... but okay. Then, valentine's day is not christian, it's a recent celebration. something like 19's.
Then there is people of occident who don't celebrate it, because really, we just don't care about it. no, it's sympathic, when you've a girl/boyfriend, but really, not a big celebration like chrismas or what.
So, d what you want, but really, nobody cares what you think about valentine's day.

Hello friend, I was a little confused by ponts 2 and 3 in your explanation, could you find the time to explain them a little bit more?
2. It invites to lust and encourages immorality and forbidden love. (Do you mean it encourages intimacy between people who are not married or maybe not even in love? Would it be okay if point 2 happened between married people?)

3. It busies the heart with useless matters and attaches it to harmful matters, that only go against the teachings of our religion. (Do you mean it makes people want or be pressured to have a relantionship or a one-night stand, and makes them concern their hearts with such things too much?)

Just to see if I got thinks right.
