Description Assalaamu alaikum [peace be to you],

I had several people asking me to write about Sunni and Shi'a, so here is a brief comparison. more to come in sha'Allah.

What's the Difference Between Shi'a and Sunni Muslims?

Both Sunni and Shi'a Muslims share the most fundamental Islamic beliefs and articles of faith. They are both Muslims. The differences between these two main sub-groups within Islam initially stemmed not from religious and spiritual differences, but political ones. Over the centuries, however, these political differences have spawned a number of varying practices and positions which have come to carry a spiritual significance.

Origins - A Question of Leadership
The division between Shi'a and Sunni dates back to the death of the Prophet Mohammed -peace be upon him-, and the question of who was to take over the leadership of the Muslim nation.
Sunni Muslims agree with the position taken by many of the Prophet's companions, that the new leader should be elected from among those capable of the job. This is what was done, and the Prophet Mohammed's closest friend and companion, Abu Bakr -may the God be pleased with him-, became the first Caliph of the Islamic nation. The word "Sunni" in Arabic means "one who follows the Sunnah (traditions of the Prophet)"
The Shia Muslims believe that following the Prophet Mohammed's death, leadership should have passed directly to his cousin/son-in-law, Ali ibn Abi-Talib -may the God be pleased with him-. They believe that leadership should have stayed within the Prophet's own family, among those specifically appointed by him, or among Imams appointed by God Himself.
The word "Shi'a" in Arabic means "a group" or "supportive party of people". The commonly-known term is shortened from the historical "Shi'at-Ali," or "the Party of Ali." They are also known as followers of "Ahl-al-Bayt" or "People of the Household" (of the Prophet -peace be upon him-).

Differences in Religious Practice
This initial question of political leadership has led to the development of the largest institutional division within the Muslim community, without any drastic variation in fundamental beliefs or practices.
It is important to remember that despite these differences in opinion and practice, Shi'a and Sunni Muslims share the main articles of Islamic belief and are considered by most to be brethren in faith. In fact, most Muslims do not distinguish themselves by claiming membership in any particular group, but prefer to call themselves simply, "Muslims."

The enemies of Islam, and in order to exploit the wealth of the Muslim lands and keep the Muslims as a weak nation, often try to deepen the wounds of division and cause enmity between the Muslims. The Sunni-Shi'a differences are passionately employed by those with vested interests for political or "religious" hegemony.

Distribution
Sunni Muslims make up the majority (85%) of Muslims all over the world. Significant populations of Shia Muslims can be found in Iran and Iraq, and large minority communities in Yemen, Bahrain, Syria, and Lebanon.

It's very important to note that Shia/Sunni differences shouldn't be seen as similar to Catholic/Protestants sects in Christianity (like some non-muslims may think). while the Catholic and Protestants follow different versions of the Bible*, the Shia and the Sunni follow the EXACT SAME QUR'AN. from cover to cover. I read in anti-Islamic websites some silly allegations that the Shia have a different Qur'an or that their Qur'an has more chapters than the Sunni. These false claims only aim to propagate the idea that the Qur'an was not preserved by the Almighty. in fact, they can easily be refuted. Anyone can go to a Shia mosque and a Sunni mosque and compare the Qur'an they have. so I repeat, the Shia and the Sunni have the exact same Qur'an.

I hope this was beneficial.

from [link] with some changes

more on the Shi'a and Sunni will come later, in sha'Allah [God willing]

* the Catholic Bible has 73 books, while the Protestant Bible has only 66 books.

I know I shouldn't be saying this, but since we have all kinds of people in internet, I'm obliged: Be respectful in what you write. if I feel the slightest attempt to attack any group aiming to spread falsehood and division between the Muslims, your comment will be flagged as spam. I'm saying this to the Muslims before I say it to the non-Muslims. My page is not an open space for you to attack and slander and to make everybody you don't like into a kafir. if you want to argue or debate, do so elsewhere. don't say you were not warned.

If I'm right it's from the God. If I'm wrong, it's from myself.

Very nice brother love you work.

Historically there has been never an issue between shia and sunni, in fact in places like iraq you'll find that a shia women is married to someone who's family is sunni and vice versa. It is the plan of the enemies of islam to divide us along sectarian lines.

You are either muslim or not regardless if you are sunni or shia, as long as you believe in the shahadah.

Is this even possible? I've got many infos in medias and also in social medias of how Shia people took Ali r.a. even above Muhammad SAW. And how they kept condemning the other khulafaur rasyidins and bad mouthing Aisyah r.a. My friend once told me that if I went to Shi'a country (like Iran etc) and introduce myself as "Aisyah" they would treat me indifferently...

Also how they only pray for 3 times a day instead of 5 times (and make people said they're not a part of Islam anymore)

Wallahualam

I think...maybe we the sunni didn't hate shi'ah personally. We just can't take of how many of them condemning the shahabat, and shahabiyah. In my country, there was an issue when a group of sunni attack shi'ah community in certain place. But the sunni did that because the shi'ah created scenes by condemning other shahabat and shahabiyah publically. Many said that accident won't happen if only the shi'ah didn't start the fire first. Though I can't agree of that certain sunni group's action in choosing violance to solve the problem...but I thought like "You start it all, you deserve it all."

Wallahualam...

Hope my comment won't be taken as an insult if there are some shi'ah here. I wanna believe that there are more shi'ah "who didn't like to start the fire" just because of this diversities. And I wanna believe that there are more shi'ah that didn't do the thing like what I mentioned above

Peace ^_^V

Actually, We Shi'a people pray 5 times a day. They count it 3 cause our first prayer is in the morning, Then we say our noon and evening prayer right after noon's azan. then we say our Maghreb and isha' after Maghreb azan. That's why they count it 3 and say we're not a part of Islam.
And we don't treat indifferently with anyone. We have so many other religions in Iran and we all treat them like our own family. I have a Christian friend and I love her so much. I never treated her like she's so different or something.
I'm not blaming you or anything, I just want you to know, ok?
I've nothing against sunni people. We're all Muslims after all.

You're comments are due to propaganda that has been spread.  I don't mean to offend, but rather simply spread some light on the truth.
The truth is unlike other religions, Shia / Sunni division did not take place gradually.  It happened right after the death of the prophet of Islam.  However, both Sunni and Shia lived peacefully together after his death.  There might have been arguments over who was right and who was wrong, but there was no serious fight or killing of each other.  Something has changed in recent years.  In the recent years there has been a large amount of propaganda to deceive both Sunnis and Shias to hate one another.  So what happens, they kill each other based on lies.

"You start it all, you deserve it all."

That attitude is incorrect in my opinion.  If you want to prove that the Shias are incorrect, is it right to attack and kill them?  Shias will not accept Sunni beliefs if the Sunnis are violently attacking them.
And the something goes for Shias.  If they want to prove that the Sunni belief is incorrect, insulting them is not the correct method.  But they should not be attacked because of the insults either.

But you have to think critically about this.  It is very possible that an outside party has influences on both sects.  How? This is a small example / scenario,:

we have two people: Mr Su, and Mr Shi and Mr Zi
Su and Shi.  They are also both Muslims and very religious.
Mr. Zi is a bad person.  He wants power.  But Su and Shi are very powerful together.  What does Zi do? He thinks and comes up with a plan.  If he is able to make these friends stop being friends, he will be able to control both of them.  So, he goes to Su and says that Shi said that he hates your sahaba.  He then goes to Shi and says that Su said that he hates your Imams.  Now Su and Shi becomes angry with each other.  They stop being friends.  They even fight sometimes.  Zi beats them both up and rules over them.

Something like this is possible, except in reality it is much more complicated.
There is a western philosophy and that is "Divide and Ruler" and many western powers try to use that philosophy for Muslims so that they make the Muslims weak.

I have a feeling most of the things you have heard about Shias may be either partially incorrect or completely incorrect.  And also most of the things the shia think about Sunnis may also be incorrect.

I am sure you have friends from high school or college.  Do you agree with everything in life with your friends?  You may say the best game is "game A".  They may say the best game is "game B'. Or you may have more serious disagreements with your friends.  But, you don't start hating them and thinking that they are bad people right?  The same thing has to be done with Muslims form other sects.  You have to understand that they disagree with some parts of your beliefs, but you can still be friends.  In fact, you might be able to learn something from their belief.  And they may be able to learn something from your belief.  Everyone has to gain the positive aspects from each other.
It is funny.  I have seen Sunni and Shia people unable to be friends together, but they are able to be friends with people from other beliefs such as Christianity.  It is all because of propaganda.  How come people who have much more similar beliefs can't be united and yet they try to be united with other beliefs?

Shias pray 5 times a day like everyone else, but their belief is a little different from what I can tell.  They have 3 time zones.  They can spread it out to be in the same times that Sunnis pray in, but they often combine prayers.   However, even their leaders encourage them to pray in 5 different times.  But even if they only prayed 3 times a day , I think it is silly for other Muslims to say someone is not Muslim because they pray 3 times a day or because they combine prayers.

Coz yeah... no matter that you're sunni or syi'ah, it's only a matter of how you try to be good people in this world. Even there're a bunch of sunni said they are sunni but they don't practice how to be a sunni and they still like to do bad deeds and even proud of it.

Both sunni and shi'ah just like all human in the world, always half angel and half evil, no matter of how white, how black, and how colorful the masks we are putting on...

So yeah... finally it depends on the personal ^_^V
